Ethel Lina White (1876–1944) was a British crime novelist best known for her suspenseful thrillers that often centered on ordinary women caught in dangerous circumstances. Born in Abergavenny, Wales, she initially worked for the Ministry of Pensions before devoting herself fully to writing. White achieved international recognition with her novel The Wheel Spins (1936), which was later adapted by Alfred Hitchcock into the classic film The Lady Vanishes. She authored over a dozen novels, including Some Must Watch (1933), which inspired the film The Spiral Staircase. Known for her psychological tension, atmospheric settings, and strong female protagonists, White helped shape the development of the modern thriller and remains an influential voice in early 20th-century crime fiction.
