Gunter Harder (1938-2025) was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Bonn in 1969. He was a long term scientific member of the Max-Planck-Institute for Mathematics, Bonn, and he served as one of its directors from 1995 to 2006. He received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Preis in 1987, and the Karl Georg Christian von Staudt-Preis in 2004. His research areas were number theory, in particular, the arithmetic of algebraic groups and the theory of automorphic forms, and he was one of the important contributors to the study of the cohomology of these groups.
