The author has taken the name of James Button upon a fiction based on the native that Robert Fitzroy captured in his first sailing to Tierra del Fuego on the HMS Beagle. He baptized him as Jemmy Button, since he paid for him with a mother of pearl button, hence his name. Fitzroy took Jemmy to England and educated him, bringing him back in his second voyage of the Beagle with Charles Darwin. They left Jemmy with the natives in order to experiment the possibility he would teach English to the natives in the Island. After several decades, when Jemmy was older, he began writing from Tierra del Fuego under the name of James Button.
