José Teles is a journalist, working as music critic and columnist for Jornal do Commercio in Recife since 1980. He has also contributed to several newspapers and magazines, among them O Pasquim, Caros Amigos, International Magazine, Bizz, General and Continente. He is the author of books such as Do frevo ao manguebeat [From Frevo to Manguebeat] (Editora 34, 2000), O frevo rumo à modernidade [Frevo Towards Modernity] (2008, 100 Years of Frevo award of the Recife city government); and the biographies O malungo Chico [Comrade Chico] (about Chico Science, 2004), Um menino chamado Lua [A Boy Called Lua] (about Luiz Gonzaga, 2012) and Claudionor Germano: a voz do frevo [Claudionor Germano: The voice of frevo] (2015), all published by the Pernambuco publisher Editora Bagaço.
