Mary Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist best known for her groundbreaking work Frankenstein, which is considered one of the earliest examples of science fiction. Born to famous parents—philosopher William Godwin and feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft—Shelley grew up surrounded by intellectuals. She began writing Frankensteinat just 18 years old during a trip to Switzerland with her husband, poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
