STEPHEN FORTESCUE is Associate Professor in the School of Politics and International Relations, University of New South Wales, Australia. He completed a PhD on Soviet primary party organizations at the Australian National University in 1977. After a number of years working in Soviet-related business he returned to academia, with research appointments at the ANU and the University of Birmingham. His primary research interest then was Soviet science, with monographs being published by Macmillan (1986) and Routledge (1990). Since returning to Australia, to an appointment at the University of New South Wales in 1987, he has worked on the Russian economy, with publications on privatization and industry policy, including
Policy-Making for Russian Industry (Macmillan 1997). In recent years, he has specialized in the study of the Russian mining and metals industry.
