Is mounting tension and stress sapping you of your strength? Do you lack motivation and excitement to live each day to the fullest?
This pocketbook devotional encourages you to spend time with your Creator, drawing strength from his never-ending supply. As you reflect on these devotions, Scriptures, and prayers, you will be marked by truth and motivated to embrace all that God has for you. Time spent in his presence empowers you with strength, character, and leadership. Be who God intended you to be as you let his wisdom guide you.
Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
MATTHEW 16:24 NIV
Following Jesus is a path of great joy but also real sacrifice. Often when we hear the word sacrifice, we think of maybe a mission field or giving away a large amount of money. That’s all well and good and is sometimes what God is calling us to do.
But more often, sacrifice looks like waking up at 3 a.m. to help out a sick friend, taking time during your evening to volunteer at a local soup kitchen, or praying with a co-worker. These are the little sacrifices that, when practiced through the course of years, reap the greatest rewards. What might be your “cross” today? How can you take it up and, in so doing, follow Jesus?
Father, help me to be ready to sacrifice my time and energy for those closest to me. I desire that I might love like you love. Give me strength to do this.
That I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.
PHILIPPIANS 3:10 ESV
Mimicking Jesus may not necessarily produce, from a worldly standpoint, the success that we are looking for. Yet reorienting our expectations and redefining advancement is necessary in seeing that the Biblical definition of success is more about conformity to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29) and less about worldly recognition.
When we view the world through the gospel lens, we will find that trends do not dictate a faithful service to the Lord, but rather one’s commitment to the Biblical mandate of his disciples. In these scenarios, the Sunday school answer will never fail—Jesus!
Lord Jesus, teach me to see that you are my end goal. Sharpen my eyes to see that you are not a means to another end, but rather you are the end to my means.
Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.
JAMES 1:20 NLT
Getting angry with people is pretty common. Anger is not necessarily the issue; how we control our anger or manage it is what’s imperative. James is not telling us not to be angry. He’s encouraging us to consider our anger and how it affects us as individuals and the people we love.
Think about a moment when you got angry with someone recently. Were you able to express your anger in love? You can tell someone that a particular situation made you upset; they need to know that. They also need to know why that situation made you upset. Then, take time to consider how anger can affect you and your relationships. Does your anger change the way you feel about the person you are angry with?
God, help me in my anger. Develop in me patience and self-control so I can still show love to others when I am angry.
Don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
JAMES 1:22 NLT
As you grow in your relationship with God, some of the natural desires that develop are prayer, reading Scripture, and joining together with a Christian community. When James spoke about doing “what it says,” he was referring to a kind of action that results in justice: hope for the hopeless. Just a few verses later, he speaks of caring for the widows and orphans—the poor. Following Jesus looks like standing with the marginalized, the poor, and the broken.
How can you model this kind of lifestyle? Maybe start out small by considering how you interact with a cashier or a restaurant server. How do you interact with people of different ethnic backgrounds or the poor? You may find that others will begin to imitate your actions, so consider acting out justice.
God, give me your heart for broken people. Help me to consider ways that I can stand with them and care for them, because ultimately you cared for me.
God is both the motivation and the destination for our spiritual lives.
The Lord GOD said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
GENESIS 2:18 NIV
We were never meant to do life alone. It’s important for us to have a partner, whether it be a spouse, a parent, a sibling, or just a friend, to help us out. God’s creative intention was for community. He even models what relationship looks like through an expression of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
