Chapter 1 — Snowfall & Secrets

Winterfall Town always had a way of welcoming her home—softly, silently, like a whisper drifting on a curtain of snow. As Maya stepped off the bus and inhaled the crisp December air, her chest tightened with the strange mix of nostalgia and hesitation she felt every year. Christmas in Winterfall was magical, yes… but coming back always felt like stepping into a memory she couldn’t fully touch.

Snowflakes fluttered around her scarf like tiny diamonds. The warm glow of Christmas lights danced across the quiet street, and the scent of pine drifted from the giant Christmas tree being decorated in the town square. Everything looked exactly the same. Almost too same.

Maya tugged her suitcase behind her, the wheels dragging slightly on the snow-covered cobblestones. She had only taken a few steps when—THUD!

She collided with someone.

Her phone slipped from her hand. She stumbled. But before she could fall, strong hands caught her by the arms, steadying her.

“I’m so sorry,” she said quickly, brushing snow off her coat. “I wasn’t loo—”

Then she looked up.

And froze.

The man standing in front of her was tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in a dark winter jacket dusted with snow. But it was his eyes—stormy gray, intense, familiar in a way that sent a jolt through her—that stopped her breath.

He stared back at her with a mixture of shock and… something else. Something deeper. Something almost like recognition.

Maya’s heartbeat skipped.

“Are you okay?” he asked, his voice low and warm, but rough at the edges as if unused to conversation.

“Yes. I mean—yes, I’m fine,” she managed, though her pulse was racing. “Sorry, I didn’t see you.”

“That’s alright,” he replied softly, his gaze never breaking from hers. “It’s been… a long time.”

Her brows drew together. “Do I… know you?”

That question changed his expression instantly. His jaw tightened. His eyes flickered with something unreadable—pain? Disappointment? Surprise? She couldn’t name it, but she felt it.

Instead of answering, he stepped back.

“Have a good Christmas, Maya.”

She froze again.

He knew her name.

Before she could respond, ask, or chase the answer her heart suddenly ached for, he turned and walked away, disappearing into the swirl of winter snow.

Maya stood there, speechless, shivering not from cold but from the inexplicable familiarity that wrapped around her like an unfinished dream.

How did he know her name? And why did she feel as if she should know his?

She picked up her phone and suitcase, forcing her breath to steady. This was Winterfall—maybe he was an old childhood classmate. Or someone she’d seen once during a holiday event. Or—

No. Something about the way he said her name felt… intimate. Too personal. Too close.

She couldn’t shake it.

By the time she reached her family’s cabin on Maple Hill, her mind was still replaying the moment. The man’s eyes. His voice. His certainty that they’d met before. The strange tension in the air that felt almost like… unfinished business.

Maya pushed the thought away and bent to pick up a small pile of mail that had been left by the door. Christmas cards, a parcel from her aunt, and—

She stopped.

One envelope was different.

No stamp. No return address.Just her name, handwritten in a slanted cursive she didn’t recognize.

Maya frowned and slid a finger under the flap, opening it.

A single piece of paper fell out.

Her breath caught as she read the short, chilling sentence written in thick black ink:

“Leave Winterfall before Christmas Eve… or you’ll regret coming back.”

The paper trembled in her hands.

Her throat tightened.

What kind of joke was this?

A breeze swept through the porch, lifting the edges of the warning note as if urging her to act. Maya stepped inside quickly, shutting the door behind her, her heart pounding in her ears.

Winterfall had always been peaceful.

Quiet.Safe.Home.

But tonight, the silence felt sinister.

Her return hadn’t gone unnoticed.

And somewhere in this snowy little town—someone wanted her gone.
