A Story

A bright day. The world moving along its usual busy-ness. People not paying any attention to anything but themselves. Nothing out of the ordinary. It is a Sunday. People have flocked to the malls. Many making a beeline to the grocery stores. It is time to stock up for the week. Harried parents. Nosiy kids. Many singletons. Purposefully busy. Single-mindedly isolated in the ivory towers of their minds. She slips past the milling crowds of the mall. A small shaded wood lies behind the huge building.

One small dog tethered to a car in the parking lot notices her. Barks madly. Animal instincts are supposed to be stronger than human instincts. Animals are also supposed to be strongly intuitive. This animal doesn’t like seeing her skulking away into the dullness of the woods behind the mall. It makes the small hairs on the animal rise on foreboding. Lacking the gift of human communication, the dog goes wild. It barks. It jumps around in a frenzy. It tries to draw attention on itself and on the thing that is making it go mad. It is unheeded.

The passersby look at the dog with various responses. Some find it irritating. Some blame the owners for tying it up in the heat. Some sympathise with its restlessness. Some approach it to comfort or console it. But the mad barking and jumping keeps them away. Calling security becomes a real option. Announcing for the owners to come and settle the animal down is another option. Many words are spoken but there is no action or movement. Typical. Most people only want to work their mouths and not move their butts to take any action.
