A
n American Marriage is a novel by Tayari Jones. It is an examination of a man’s wrongful incarceration and its effect on his marriage and the couple’s families.
Roy Othaniel Hamilton starts his story by saying he had a good year being married to Celestial. He had a good job which made it possible for Celestial to stay home and work on her art-making dolls. Roy acted as her manager and she drew inspiration from him. They had some quarrels but they also made up easily. Then one day, the couple went to visit his parents in Eloe and decided to spend the night in a hotel. They had a fight that night and to ease the tension, agreed to have a 15-minute break from the heated argument. Roy went out of the room to fill up the ice bucket. He met an older woman whom he helped bring her ice bucket to her room. Later that night, police came for Roy. The woman whom he helped earlier that night accused him of raping her. A trial was held and the jury decided Roy is guilty and charged him 12 years in prison. In prison, Roy is shocked to learn that Walter, his cellmate, is his biological father who abandoned Roy’s mother when she was pregnant with him. Celestial tells the story of how they first met in college, in Andre's room where Celestial would often hang out. Celestial and Andre were childhood friends. Andre introduced them but they did not get together after that. They again encountered each other after college, in New York when both were already working. Olive, Roy’s mother, does not fully accept Celestial as her daughter-in-law but she tries hard to be nice to her. After Roy’s incarceration, she dies of cancer. On the day she was to be buried, Andre and Celestial attended the church service and the burial rites. Feeling bad and needing a drink, they went to a bar afterward where Celeste drank more than she could take. They went to their hotel afterward and instead of allowing Andre to sleep in his own room, the already drunk Celestial invited him into her room. They slept together that night and had been a couple since then. After three years of being patient, Celestial writes Roy to tell him she does not want to be his wife anymore. Celestial’s father, Mr. Davenport thinks that Roy has been sent to prison without doing anything wrong and the least that Andre can do to help Roy is to stay away from Celestial or give her back to Roy when he comes back. Davenport expressed his objection to her daughter's relationship during Thanksgiving Day when Celestial and Andre announced that they intended to get married. After five years, Roy is set free and hopes to win back his wife.
