Chapter One
Eden had been dreading this day since the moment her sister, Carol, had announced she was getting married. A wedding was supposed to be a happy occasion, a cause for celebration. But not when your sister was marrying the brother of your ex-best friend.
Eden had done a successful job of avoiding said ex-best friend for ten years, crying off any get-togethers, school reunions, and even her sister’s engagement and hen parties. Understandably, it had made her incredibly unpopular with Carol and their parents, but she’d had to put up with their displeasure for the sake of her own sanity.
Today, though, Janine or no Janine, Eden was going to her sister’s wedding. It was kind of crucial, really, given she was chief bridesmaid. She was just thankful that Janine hadn’t been asked to be a bridesmaid. That would have been problematic.
“I honestly don’t understand what happened between the two of you. What made you fall out so badly that you still want to avoid her?” Carol was asking, as the hairdresser put the finishing touches to her up-do, then settled her tiara on top of it, leaving the attached veil trailing down her back.
Well you wouldn’t, would you? Eden thought, trying hard not to let her emotions show on her face. You’ve never been confused about your sexuality and come on to your best friend, have you? But she kept quiet, determined not to ruin her sister’s special day.
“Can you even remember what happened?” Carol continued, thanking the hairdresser and standing up. She moved over to the full-length mirror in the room and examined herself from every angle. The hairdresser held up another mirror so the bride could see the back of her hair. She nodded.
“Yes,” Eden replied shortly, then added, “You look beautiful, sis. Really gorgeous.”
Inside her head, though, she was already reliving that fateful night.
“Yeah! Livin’ on a Prayer, I love this one! Come on, let’s dance,” Eden said, grabbing Janine’s hand and pulling her away from the bar.
“All right, all right, I’m coming. Let me grab my drink!”
They made their way, cheap alcopops in hand, onto the dance floor, which comprised of a series of square tiles which lit up in various colors, flashing on and off and changing hue in time to the music. It was cheesy as hell, and the girls loved it. So did every teenager within a ten-mile radius. The place was packed, and they adored the fact that they met new people all the time, people they hadn’t gone to school with. Guys they hadn’t gone to school with. It was new, exciting, grown up. They were on the very edge of adulthood, and they couldn’t be happier about it.
They reached the flashing floor tiles and began jumping around to the song—taking care not to spill their drinks—and sang along at their top of their voices. Mercifully, they weren’t audible over the thumping music. X-Factor hopefuls they were not. But they didn’t care. They were having fun, and that was what life was all about, wasn’t it?
Their insane bopping didn’t get a second glance. After all, every other person in the place was doing the same thing, despite the fact the song was released when they were in their cots—probably even before some of them were born. Certainly Eden and Janine hadn’t been. The club was heaving; the atmosphere was charged, electric. Something life-changing was going to happen, Eden was sure of it.
The song faded out, to be replaced by Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. The place erupted. Well, the female contingent did, anyway. The boys shifted off the dance floor and watched, amused, as the dancing grew wilder, more abandoned.
“Hey,” Eden said, leaning forward to shout to her friend, “those boys over there are watching us. Do you see them? The cute ones in the dark T-shirts.”
“I see them,” Janine replied, taking a swig of her drink. “Shall we give them something to really watch?”
“What do you have in mind?”
“I dunno, a sexy dance or something? Give ‘em a bit of a tease? Perhaps they’ll come over and chat us up then.”
“Sounds good to me. Come ‘ere then.”
With that, they moved so they were dancing chest to chest, hip to hip. They slung their free arms around each other’s necks and swayed together, happy and smiling. It was a slow dance to a fast song, but it didn’t matter.
“Are they looking?” Janine asked, turning them so Eden could watch them over her friend’s shoulder.
“Are they ever,” Eden replied, moving her hand from her friend’s neck and sliding it down her back, eventually cupping her bum. She laughed. “Their eyes are practically popping out of their heads now.”
“Well, you are squeezing my arse.”
They giggled. “Oh yeah. Want me to stop?”
“Nah, not if it’s driving them crazy.”
A thought popped abruptly into Eden’s head. It’s driving me crazy. She was suddenly aware of how aroused she was; how her breasts felt heavy, how her nipples pressed against the cups of her bra, how the gusset of her tiny thong clung to her wet pussy.
What the hell? Why was dancing with her best friend having such an effect on her? Sure, they were dancing seductively, but it was for the benefit of the lads watching them. They’d certainly gotten their attention, anyway. They weren’t paying a scrap of heed to any of the other scantily-clad girls on the dance floor. Which, of course, had been the plan.
Just as she had that thought, the boys started talking to one another, and made to move away. She couldn’t allow that—Janine had wanted to get their attention and Eden was going to make damn sure they kept it.
She shifted her hand back up and placed it behind Janine’s neck, then pulled her friend toward her. Eden saw, just for a split second, the look of utter surprise on Janine’s face before she closed her eyes and pressed her lips against Janine’s.
Deep down, she knew she was kissing her friend for another reason, but on the surface she maintained that it was essential to keep playing their little game with the lads in the dark T-shirts.
Janine hadn’t pulled away or screamed blue murder, so Eden pressed her lips harder onto her friend’s for a few seconds longer before opening them and attempting to push her tongue into Janine’s mouth. Janine allowed it, parting for her, then pausing for a second before slipping her hand to the nape of Eden’s neck and returning the kiss with enthusiasm.
Janine’s grip tightened, bringing their faces ever closer, their lips mashing together bruisingly. Their teeth clashed, but they barely noticed. They continued kissing like there was no tomorrow, like they’d never see each other again.
Eden had never been so turned on in her life. She’d been with a couple of guys, but they hadn’t aroused her so much with foreplay and full sex as Janine was doing with just a kiss. And it wasn’t as if Janine was massively experienced, either. Their experience was about on a par, and yet, here they were, doing this.
They carried on for a minute or two, their tongues tangling together as the rest of the world paled into insignificance. Eden knew, suddenly, that even a lifetime of this would not be enough. She wanted her friend, more than she’d ever wanted anyone.
