About the Author
Making crafts from the comfort of your home is a great idea that could become a hobby, a business, and eventually a career. This is good because it is a great medium to unleash your imagination as a creative person, and if the right tools are available to turn your wonderful ideas into reality, it holds potential. Speaking of tools to aid the manifestation of your ideas, Cricut is a manufacturer that creates a wide assortment of tools to help crafters and designers. The Cricut Maker is the ultimate smart cutting machine, as it cuts over 300 materials ranging from papers, vinyl, balsa wood, fabrics, leather, cork, etc. It basically works like a printer, but rather than printing, it cuts out materials. The Cricut Maker, being a clever digital machine, also has writing features, such as the “accessory holder” that enables you to create scoring lines on 3D projects and draw intricate designs with a whole variety of colors and different weights in order to create different effects. Aside from cutting and drawing or writing, there are several other tools that can deboss, engrave, create perforations, and create wavy lines. The Cricut Maker is a part of a long series of machines made by Cricut, being just a part of one of the four major device series:
Cricut Maker 3 is the new version of the Cricut Maker machines and comes with several improvements that supersede the first generation of machines. While it might be similar to the Cricut Explore in terms of its functionality, the Cricut Maker 3 is a heavy-duty model that features the fastest cutting speeds caused by the bigger motors, the most cutting force, and the highest potential for large-scale manufacturing. This cutting machine easily enables the creation of custom gifts, custom designs, and home décor, as well as a small business of handmade objects. The Maker 3 has an expandable suit of 13 different tools, all sold separately and allows you to score, cut, engrave, foil, emboss, etc. This variety of tools is what differentiates the Cricut Maker 3 from other cutting machines. The pressure and direction of the tools to match your material intuitively are intelligently controlled by the Maker Adaptive Tool System. This allows for active management of the blade's position by intelligently lifting and rotating the blade into the optimal position for your very next cut, thereby enabling greater precision when cutting, especially with smaller and more intricate projects or thicker materials. Also, it has a cutting force 10 times greater than other cutting machines. Just like the original Cricut Maker, the Maker 3 can also use the fine point blade, the bonded fabric blade, the deep point blade, the foil tool, the rotary blade, the scoring stylus, and quick swap tools.
You might want to ask; How does the machine know which blade you are using? When you proceed to cut your project, the machine moves the carriage all the way to the right, which is called homing. It will then scan the blade to find out which one has been installed in the machine.
While most designs in the original Cricut Maker were left unchanged in the Maker 3, the C button has been changed to have the universal icon of the “Play” button, and the arrow button looks different as well.
Also, just like the previous model, the setup and use have been left easy. Also, you can still use all of the old materials you already have with the new Cricut Maker 3. Something that you may not notice is that the Maker 3’s name is written on the tool housing, making it really easy to know exactly which machine you are working with.
Another update is the material guide on the tray, which ensures your material is correctly inserted into your machine every time you want to cut. The material guide still serves as a fix point for the roll holder.
First, it is important to keep in mind that every Cricut machine is designed in such a way that it will allow users to easily operate it. The Cricut Maker 3, however, has stood out to be the most complex of them all; therefore, understanding its full usage won’t be easy from the get-go.
The Cricut Maker 3 can be connected to your smart phone or computer via Bluetooth or a USB cable, if necessary. The Cricut software called “Design Space” allows you to adapt and edit designs before requesting the Cricut Maker machine to cut them out. You can also upload designs to the software. When the design has been made, all you need to do is press a button, and the small blade in the Cricut machine will cut the material following the line pattern of the design you created. The Cricut Maker machine has a “sticky” mat that strongly secures the material so it doesn’t move out of place, thereby allowing a clean cut.
A lot of things in the Maker 3 are the same as in the original Maker, such as the overall look and size. Both machines have a handy docking station to put on your phone or tablet, lots of storage in the compartment to keep your extra blades and tools, and both machines are able to cut the same material. Apart from the many features that Maker 3 and the original Maker have in common, here are the major updates in Maker 3.
Power and Speed: The mechanics of the Maker 3 are twice as fast as the original Maker, which is of great essence when doing large or intricate projects. This faster cutting speed is only available when you cut without the mat with the smart materials.
Smart Materials: The second change is that Maker 3 can cut new smart materials. The smart materials are specially designed, so they do not need to be on a mat. This aspect of cutting without a mat is a game-changer for those who struggle to cut Vinyl.
Much like the smart materials that can be gotten for the Cricut Joy, these materials come adhered to a special backing that can feed through the machine without the need for a cutting mat. And because they are not restricted to the size of the mat, the new smart materials are able to cut up to 12 feet long in one go. The Cricut Smart materials are designed to be used with Maker 3 machines, along with the design space. The smart materials, which include Cricut Smart Vinyl, Smart Iron-On, and Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock, make it easy to personalize everyday items like tumblers, t-shirts, and notebooks. Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock comes in a wide variety of different colors. The Smart Iron-On needs no calculation; just load and go. It is also easy to weed and apply. Smart Vinyl is also available in a wide variety of different colors, lengths, and effects and has removable and permanent options. They also have rolls up to 75 feet long. Cricut Smart Materials can be used for single images or repeated cuts.
Roll Holder Accessory: The Cricut roll holder is an attachment that holds new Smart Material and other material rolls and will pull them out and cut directly from the roll. There will be no need to measure out and pre-cut the material and then stick it to a mat. The roll holder is easy to add to your Cricut Maker 3, and it keeps the material aligned for clean, precise cuts. They also have built-in portable trimmers that ensure a straight cut every time. The portable trimmer now measures just over 13 inches, accommodating those larger smart materials. Keep in mind that if you have leftover Smart Vinyl material, you can still put it on your mat and feed it through the machine.
