When the local newspaper sent the photographer out to shoot my garden, I had no idea he was going to shoot me full of something else instead.
The guy showed up and introduced himself as Tom. He was sexy as hell, and the way he eyed me up and down suggested he liked my curves. That made me feel doubly bad about everything. To be honest, I felt like a fraud when the paper contacted me for a feature story on my garden. The jungle that loomed out my back door wasn’t because of my horticultural talent.
Tom followed me through the house, playing with his camera.
“I thought the reporter chick would be with you,” I said as I unlocked the rear exit.
“Janice is out on another story. She’ll be in touch though, to interview...” he trailed off, his eyes going wide when I threw open the door.
“Holy shit,” he murmured.
“I know, right?”
We stood in the door frame, staring. Opening that door was a lot like how the Wizard of Oz movie showed life in black and white until Dorothy stepped outside in Oz. My backyard was a freakish oasis that belonged in an Amazonian jungle or something.
Together we went out, Tom gaping around at the lush foliage surrounding us, all of it overgrown to well above our height. Vines rustled softly on a breeze I couldn’t feel. Large, trumpet-like red and purple flowers were dotted everywhere, their heads bowed in a droop that wasn’t normal.
He inhaled deeply of the rich, fragrant scent that wafted around. Then he raised his camera and snapped off some shots. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
