Can we justify putting our jobs before our family? What happens when we try to rectify it? Is the right solution always the first choice or do we just get the job done? Sometimes what happens to our children says more about us than our kids. When Adrian's father gets a promotion it means moving to a new city and new school, fitting in for Adrian isn't as simple as he thought.

BULLIED: A Short Story

Adrian sat in his room and watched the clock tick away, inching closer to the moment he would have to go. It was simple, he just wouldn’t go, he would stay in his room all day and no one would know. School wasn’t a pleasant place for Adrian, the pupils hated him, the teachers hated him, it even felt as if the brick walls had it in for him. Primary school had been a gift, Adrian used to have a fairly comfortable circle of friends. Secondary school is where his difficulties began. He had been in high school for three years when his family had to move half way across the country. His father was a very busy man, who had recently received a very big promotion. Adrian however had to bear the brunt of the move, all his friends getting left behind at his old school. Adrian was Fourteen, ruddy and quite quiet. Other boys were chasing girls and asking them out, Adrian felt more comfortable playing football or computer games. He loved life back in Sherborne, the town was small and Adrian knew every street. People were friendly, even waving to those they didn’t know. When they moved to the city things became different. People weren't so friendly and it was big, all of it. He worked so hard to make friends at his new school, however it just didn’t seem to fit. He was by nature quiet but still he tried to get to know his class mates and yet still they picked on him. Sitting in the room his eyes still fixed on the clock as it crept closer to the moment he would be forced to leave for school by his mother. He felt his stomach twisting and turning and he wished it would get worse and grant him a reason to get off school. The clock hit half past eight and the shout came from downstairs.

“Adrian! Time to go!”

“Why couldn’t she forget to remind me just once” His heart crumbed inside and he dragged his feet along the carpet and down one step at a time till he reached the bottom of the stairs.

“Ah your alive” his mum smiled and gave him a nudge

“Yeah, In body if not mind”

“Oh come on, where's your enthusiasm, I know its been hard settling in but you'll get there”

“I know”

“Just keep your head down and work hard and you'll get through, now where my hug” Adrian hugged his mother and left for school. Onto the bus he got, barely raising his eyes, yet just enough to see if Richard and Michael were on. Those two made his life a living hell, Richard was a farmers' son and was well built and Michael was his lanky friend who urged him on.

“There he is Richy! There’s dumpy Adrian! Get him!” Adrian felt a shiver go up his spine, the air was thick in the bus and sound of Richard’s feet thudding up the bus towards Adrian was akin to that of an elephant. The first blow was the worst, Richards hands were nearly the size of Adrian's head.

“Harder Richy Harder! Give him a good kick in the nuts too!” Adrian crumpled to the floor and curled up hoping to dull the impact of the blows coming his way.

“You kids, stop messing about or I’ll remove you from the bus” The driver leaning back just enough to see who was fighting.

“Yea Adrian! Stop messing about on the bus!” rasped Michael.

“Yea Adrian, do as the man says” Richards mocking tone hurting less than the kick he aimed at Adrain's ribs as he walked off.

“I want to die” Adrian muttered as he slowly climbed up to a seat. As he lent his head against the bus window a tear rolled from his eye and he held his hand to his chest. Once they reached school Adrian made his way to class.

“Homework Adrian! Why is it not done?” Mrs Spiers jabbed a finger in his face

“Mrs...” Adrian wanted to say so much but couldn't, he wanted to tell the reasons why he hadn’t done his homework but the words wouldn’t come out. He wanted to say how he went to bed and cried till it hurt but the shame of saying such a thing kept him silent. “I know you kids go home and play video games all night so don’t fill me with some story, tell me the truth now” Adrian could feel the spit from her mouth as she spoke.

“I forgot, Mrs” his voice squeaking as he spoke.

“FORGOT? DON’T LIE TO ME, TELL ME THE TRUTH!”

“Sorry Mrs, I was playing video games”

“Who even called them video games anymore?” he thought to himself, not that it mattered.
