Around three in the morning, Danny had just started to study for an upcoming Chemistry test when his roommate crashed into the dorm room and died, but not before giving Danny something that led him down a horrible path he would spend the rest of his life wishing he had never been dragged into.

Chapter 1

Around three in the morning, Danny was pulling up his worn-out notes on the periodic table to study for an upcoming chemistry test when the door crashed open, causing him to jump. He stared open-mouthed as the tall, broad-shouldered student who had been rooming with him at the college for two years now, slammed the door shut, and leaned against it sobbing loudly.

“Ken? Jesus Christ, Ken, what’s going on?” Danny hurriedly slid off the bed, concerned Ken had been in a brawl and might have injured himself.

Ken turned to Danny and grabbed him, and despite the panic, Danny couldn’t help but notice a small wad of papers in his hand.

“She’s coming after me, bro! God, I’m damned, and she’s coming after me!” He shoved the papers into Danny’s pocket before letting him go and leaned against the door, trembling all over like a gelatin.

Before Danny could get more out of him, Ken’s eyes riveted on the window behind Danny, and he screamed such a high-pitched scream, Danny staggered back, covering his ears. God, he had never heard anyone scream like that. There was a cracking noise as Ken’s body suddenly contorted as if he had decided to become a world-class gymnast.

Ken fell to his knees, still twisted in an agonizing looking position, curling the fingers of one hand into Danny’s shorts, pulling them halfway down his legs, and forcing Danny to bend his knees to catch them until he could get down on the floor. Ken’s eyes were frantic with terror and rolled up to reveal nothing but whites while his joints groaned and made popping noises.

Danny tried to help him to the floor. He was scared out of his mind and convinced Ken was OD’ing on some heavy shit. He noticed that Ken’s lips began to turn blue, and the veins in his face darkened; the blood vessels suddenly made an appearance on Ken’s face like some fucked up spider web, and when he opened his mouth, Danny was treated to a grisly sight.

Ken’s entire mouth had turned pitch black like a dank cave.

As he went limp, Ken managed to dig his fingers into Danny one last time and whispered, “Please save my soul!”

Danny stared at him, bewildered. He shook Ken slightly. Then harder. He checked for a pulse, his own jack-hammering. No pulse. No Breath. The blood vessels were disappearing, leaving Ken as white as a corpse.

The door opened as other students peered in, trying to see what the commotion was. Danny pointed to one and asked him to call for an ambulance. Although in his heart, he knew it was futile, he began CPR. He prayed whatever had turned Ken’s mouth as black as a rotted tooth was not contagious.

She’s coming after me??

A few hours later, Danny found himself sitting in a waiting room in a nearby hospital, trying to comfort Ken’s girlfriend. He felt terrible that he hadn’t been able to revive Ken and still bewildered as to what happened. The police came by and asked questions to decide if this was a homicide, overdose, or a natural cause case. Of course, they wouldn’t know for sure until an autopsy was done.

“Did the deceased do any drugs?”

Ken‘s girlfriend told them he didn’t, and Danny agreed. He was so shocked he barely followed what was being said.

“Where was he tonight? Was there an altercation of any kind?”

Ken’s girlfriend denied any altercations, and Danny admitted he didn’t know. He had last seen Ken in a class they shared. Ken liked to party, but he was also a good student and got along pretty much with everybody.

The questions went on and on before they were allowed to leave. Since she had been dropped off by the police he offered the grief stricken girl a ride. Danny followed her directions to the all-girls University she went to. He was afraid she was going to cry and wail all the way back to the college, but she didn’t. Instead, an almost stony silence descended on them. Nervous, Danny turned on the radio, which she promptly turned off. He tapped on the wheel, trying to think of anything but Ken. He didn’t know why, but he kept looking at the empty back seat through the rearview mirror.

“I think he was cheating on me,” the girl next to him said in a flat voice.

She spoke so suddenly the car jerked briefly. He wasn’t sure how to respond. “Uh, sorry...I...”

“I found nudes on his phone and a text message where he was hooking up with someone.”

Danny turned the car into the driveway, leading to the guardhouse that looked over her university.

“Maybe you should talk to the police about it,” Danny said.

The night was starting to give way to dawn, and all he wanted right now was to go to bed and try to move on from this horrible moment. Danny didn’t kid himself, he sure as hell wasn’t going to be able to get the sound of Ken screaming out of his mind. He pulled up to the big double doors of her school to let her out. She looked at him with red, watery eyes.

“I loved him. I loved him so much.” She started to weep again.

Danny debated leaning over to open the door and give her a hint. “Look, uh...I’m sorry I don’t know your name...”

This caused her to laugh wildly through her tears. “Of course, you don’t. I loved him, and he never talked about me. That bastard! I don’t care, though. I don’t care who else he was fucking. I loved him anyway,” she said this through clenched teeth as if she had loved Ken to spite him.

Danny was afraid the crazy woman would go into a bout of hysterics, but to his relief, she threw the door open, causing the car to creak and rock in protest, and got out. With a huff she leaned into the open window after slamming the door to grab her purse and phone, which she had forgotten, and turned to run up the steps, sobbing loudly. Danny watched her until she got to the double doors and went inside before he turned his car around and headed back to his college.

It was a few hours later he found the papers that Ken had stuffed into his pocket. He was too tired to read them, so he put them on his desk, meaning to be nosy later.

It was a few hours later he woke in time to see the papers catch fire.
