Cher's divorce from Sonny Bono in 1974 was a huge moment in her life. For years, they were a famous pair, both in music and on TV. As "Sonny & Cher," they performed together and became known all over the world. But behind the scenes, their marriage was falling apart. Sonny controlled almost everything about their lives, including their career and even Cher’s personal choices. Cher started feeling like she couldn’t be herself anymore. She wanted to break free and make her own decisions.
When Cher filed for divorce, she didn’t just leave Sonny; she left the life that had been built around their partnership. For a long time, people saw Cher as just “half” of Sonny & Cher. But after the divorce, she made a bold decision: she was going to stand on her own. She wanted to prove to the world that she could be successful without Sonny. It wasn’t going to be easy, but Cher was determined.
In the years following the divorce, Cher began to rebuild her career. At first, it was hard for people to see her as a solo artist. She had always been known for being part of a duo, and many wondered if she could make it alone. But Cher did not give up. She worked with music executive David Geffen, who helped her get a new record deal. With this deal, Cher was able to record music that she truly loved, and she began to take control of her career. It was a big step toward her independence.
In 1975, Cher’s next big move was to launch her own TV show. This was another challenge for her. Hosting a TV show meant she would need to be funny, charming, and entertaining. Cher was up for it. The show, simply called Cher, was a mix of comedy, music, and fashion. Cher’s quick wit and bold style helped the show become a hit. She wore extravagant costumes, designed by Bob Mackie, and showed off her fun personality. The show helped her gain even more fans, and she proved to everyone that she was more than just Sonny’s partner.
At the same time, Cher’s personal life was also going through big changes. She married musician Gregg Allman in 1975, only shortly after her divorce from Sonny. Their marriage was filled with passion, but also struggles, mainly because of Gregg’s addiction problems. Cher filed for divorce after just nine days, but the couple later reconciled. They had a son, Elijah Blue, before the marriage ended for good in 1979. Through all of this, Cher learned a lot about herself. She became even more focused on her career and her children.
Being a mother was one of the most important parts of Cher’s life. She had two children—Chaz, whom she had with Sonny, and Elijah Blue, her son with Gregg. Raising her kids wasn’t always easy, but Cher did her best to give them a good life. She wanted to be there for them, even though her career kept her busy. Chaz, especially, became a big part of Cher’s journey. As Chaz grew up, Cher supported him through many challenges. In 2009, Chaz came out as transgender, and Cher stood by him, even though it was difficult for her at first. Cher showed how much she loved her children, no matter what.
