Clarise, who is not only popular but can channel magic, talks to him in the market. When she asks if he would like to sneak out to see a night show with a Town Magician at a neighboring village, Samual is unsure what to do.

CLARISE AND THE NIGHT SHOW

The Town Magician's world includes magic and fantasy creatures like goblins and dragons. Towns are protected and prosper based on the talent of their Town Magician, though not all people have magic. The Town Magician stories focus on one boy, Samual, who doesn’t have magic, but wishes he did.

There are many about the adventures of Samual, Clarise, and Rory. Some of those stories take place before Embracing the Magic. (Book 1 of the Town Magician series - https://www.sa-schneider.com/books/embracing-the-magic/). The following story takes place when Samual and Clarise are younger, and haven’t become friends. Yet.

* * *

There she was again, with her gaggle of friends. Samual studied the girls as they meandered between stalls, Clarise always in the lead. She smiled (beaming smile) and laughed (melodious laugh), and her hair bounced (clean hair, shiny) as the group swirled from one vendor’s table to another. Samual bobbed and weaved to keep them in sight when other shoppers blocked the view.

How would it feel to have so many friends? How can they all be friends? It seemed fantastical.

“Hey, you open?”

Samual twitched when the voice interrupted his thoughts. He blinked. A moment ago, no one stood by his table in the market. But now, a bearded man not only stood, but glowered. Mr. Travers, who seemed to be grumpy all the time.

“Um, yes sir, Mr. Travers. Give me a moment to finish getting my wares out.” Great, a potential sale, and he had been daydreaming. Good thing his father had stayed home.

Samual flung his vegetables onto the wooden table. It could, no, it should, be called a shabby bench (less shabby since he had put a blanket on it) and not a table.

The man snatched a handful of papu. They were wonderfully green and firm, not scraggly like others at market. He eyed them, flipped them over, and eyed them again. What he didn’t do was reach for his purse of coins. Samual’s lips twitched, first one side, then the other. He strained to smile, and Mr. Traver’s frown deepened. “Bah, why would I want these when you’re so rough with them?”

What should he say? Should he smile bigger? He tried a big grin (well, bigger at least), but it felt phony as it crept onto his face.

The man never blinked as he continued to stare at Samual. Yeah, this was officially the most uncomfortable situation ever. Samual shifted. “Kids. Bah,” the man exclaimed as he tossed the papu onto the table and stomped away.

Samual sighed and more carefully arranged the items. There remained little hope for a good day when an angry customer started it.
