Clatter.

Next door, something was finally stirring.

The house had been empty for a long time. But now it seemed to be inhabited again. By a couple. The couple had contacted us shortly after moving in and announced that they would introduce themselves later.

The evening had just begun. I already wanted to make myself comfortable. Then the doorbell rang. And now the two stood politely smiling in front of our front door. Lucy, around her mid-thirties, was a petite slender woman, only slightly shorter than Mike. She emphasized her girlish, almost boyish appearance with short-cropped auburn hair. She had wonderful big brown eyes with which she looked at me for a long time as we toasted the neighborly 'you' with our champagne glasses. Her mouth was adorned with narrow beautifully shaped lips, which she kept opening to a small inviting crack.

Mike's outward appearance conveyed energy and stamina. His muscular body suggested a professional occupation that required strength.

While my wife Julia was hooking Mike, our new neighbor, and roaming our garden and that of our new neighbors with him, Lucy was eager to take a look at our kitchen.

"We're not getting ours for another week," she explained.
