Successful entrepreneurs may also be thought of as "idea machines." We know that Leonardo used his own form of mind mapping to make notes about his creations, long before Tony Buzan brought about the modern mind mapping system.
The entrepreneur of today has many hats to wear to run a successful business. Productivity comes to mind as an entrepreneur needs to look at ideas and bring the gold to the top while getting rid of the debris. Mind mapping helps with the elimination process connected to productivity.
Tasks for entrepreneurs are often extremely complex, and a regular "to-do" list does not fit into their daily routines. Mind maps allow the entrepreneur to flesh out tasks, adding in pertinent data such as timelines and responsibilities.

Introduction

Modern mind mapping has been shown to be very effective in helping people get their creative thoughts out of their head and in a form that helps in many areas such as organization, creative thinking and problem solving.

The first known use of mind mapping comes from the 3rd century A.D. Porphyry of Tyros engaged in writing an introduction to one of Aristotle’s creative pieces. Porphyry decided that a representation of a tree with its multiple branches, would allow him to organize his thoughts more efficiently and the Porphyrian Tree was born.

The best known figure from history to use a mind mapping procedure was the famous painter Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo was also an amazing inventor and used a brain mapping system to organize his notes on his inventions such as the concepts for a diving suit, parachute and even a helicopter.

Today, mind maps have evolved beyond the pencil and paper for those who prefer to use software. In this eBook, we will discuss not only how to use a mind map but also 15 of the best uses for mind mapping in today’s world.

What is Mind Mapping?

Mind mapping is a way of seeing information in a different way, often leading to a more focused mind. How we see things, depends on what type of focus we use. In the natural world if you go out for an early morning walk, you see the flowers and the dew sparkling in the sun.

When you change your focus, you see how each dew drop clings to the flower petal. In some cases, you see a bee and by intently following the action, you see the gathering of pollen. Focus and clarity are key to mind mapping success.

With mind maps, you can take large amounts of information from your brain and put that information into very organized chunks of specific information. This will give you clarity on the project you are going to be working on. Since a mind map is a visual tool, it allows you to add color, images and text, which in turn sparks your creativity and leads to an enhanced performance.

How is Mind Mapping Different from Other Visualizations Techniques?

It has come to be a truth that multi-tasking is actually not effective and that you should focus on one important task or subject at a time. This is also evident when you compare mind mapping to concept maps when you talk about visualization. Concept maps work on connecting multiple words and ideas, using text. In mind mapping, you have the benefit of focusing on one word and building your mind map that will show the radial hierarchy of your singular center theme...whether it is an image or word.

There are a number of different visualization applications such as concept maps, pie charts and mekko charts, yet mind maps are superior for a number of reasons. With mind maps, you can see the data presented in such a way that it helps with memory and retention. Reorganizing a mind map to show connections is much easier than attempting to make changes in a pie chart and the brain's creativity is unleashed as you do your first and then multiple mind maps.

When we look at modeling graphs vs mind maps we see that modeling graphs typically work only in black and white, whereas mind maps allow you to color code lines/branches. This color coding aids your ability to visualize your outcome and make new superior connections.

Why are Mind Maps Effective?

We constantly see roadblocks or problems, associated to the work we do. Mind maps are an extremely effective way to take a critical problem and work through a variety of solutions until the right answer is in front of us. When faced with a problem, we often find difficulty in organizing our thoughts in our brain. From there, it becomes even more difficult to get an organized flow on paper, such as “how to do this effectively?” Mind maps take away that issue quickly.

As children, we are very creative but as we age, our creativity starts to slow down for a variety of reasons. Creativity is essential, not only for business but to keep our brains healthy and to give us satisfaction in our lives.

Mind mapping stimulates our creativity, allowing us to come up with solutions to problems, in ways we had never considered previously.

Generating ideas quickly, is something that many people struggle with. Mind mapping is a cure for that problem. Research conducted with different executives showed that they were able work much faster and move from one complex project to another in record time.

Benefits of Mind Mapping

Mind mapping is for everyone. Students of all ages benefit from mind mapping and show better progress in school. It has been shown to be of maximum benefit to creatives and business people.

Here are just some of the main benefits:

- We all have those days were we make poor decisions. Mind mapping allows us to make better decisions as we put more pertinent data into our mind maps. This allows us to analyze what the right solution may be.

- Our brains allow us to have unlimited amounts of thoughts and ideas. A mind map allows us to brain dump the best and get it to the point where the best solutions can be achieved.

- Mind maps are multipurpose. We can use them for business, for creative pursuits or daily organization of our week to week activities.

- Learning should never stop. Mind maps are a perfect tool not only for students but adults as well. Using a mind map stimulates areas of the brain that may not utilized at full potential.

It creates new neural pathways and helps to the brain to be healthy by giving it a workout.

Research was done on students about learning and how mind maps affect that. They coined one term as, “meaningful learning.” In this, students were able to make connections between knowledge they had previously and something new.

These connections became much more apparent to students as they had the mind map and were able to visualize how to connect the dots.

- Mind maps are an amazing tool to help with memory and recall. The strong connections made in the neural pathways of the brain, allow the information to flow rapidly, rather than trying to think of one piece of information and then search the brain for a corresponding piece.

- Mind maps make it easier to comprehend complex ideas and data, with over 40% of business people surveyed, stating they used it for highly strategic planning.
