Once again, I struggled to surface from the deep drug-induced sleep, which marked another surgery. another attempt to make me presentable. I wondered in despair how many more needed until the end. Moaning, I desperately tried to open my eyes.

Introduction

Through books we come into contact with everything important that has happened in the past, analyzing also current events and putting our thoughts together to predict the future. The book is a window to the world, acquiring valuable knowledge and sparking our vivid imagination. It is a means of entertainment and is generally seen as a best friend, or as a slave that carries together all valuable information for us. The book is a friend who stays together without demands, a friend you call upon at every moment and abandon when you want.

It accompanies us in the hours of boredom and loneliness, while at the same time it entertains us. In general, a book does not ask anything from us, while it waits patiently on a dusty shelf to give us its information, to get us out of dead ends and to travel us to magical worlds.

This may be the travel mission of our books. Abstract narration, weird or unconscious thoughts difficult to be understood, but always genuine and full of life experiences, these are stories of life that can’t be overlooked easily.

Chapter One

The following weeks were agonizing—not because I missed Mark, although that was true, too—but because I knew he was in pain, and not just the pain from Jake rendering him unconscious.

If I let myself think about it, I could actually feel his helpless frustration and desperation because I knew how I would feel if our roles were reversed and he was the one in danger.

I also knew he would be trying to find me.

I couldn’t let that happen, for his own safety. There was no doubt in my mind that I was a walking time bomb.

Every couple of days I called Jake’s special number and left a simply encoded message letting him know I was fine, destroying the burn phone immediately after each call, and purchasing a new one.

Thankfully, Jake had thought to supply me with plenty of cash in his duffel bag of tricks.

After the first month of switching to a new motel every night, I decided to lengthen my stays to two nights. By the end of the second month, with still no word from Jake, complacency set in, besides the fact that I was running out of places to stay in the Austin area, and I began extending the time to a week.

A few days into July, beyond tired of moving around, I found a cheap but clean motel just over half an hour’s drive from Austin in Johnson City and paid for the rest of the month in advance. If I had to leave in a hurry, I didn’t want the law after me for skipping out on my bill.

Pretending to be a tourist, I spent my days roaming the town shopping, visiting the galleries, and taking in the various historical landmarks and parks.

On Friday afternoon, three weeks into July, I was on a guided tour of one of the landmarks when I spotted him standing at the exit, no doubt waiting for me. Even with his back turned and his hair dyed dark brown, I’d recognize him anywhere.

My first instinct was to run away...hide inside the park until he was gone...but I realized that would be a futile exercise and a waste of my time and energy. He knew I was there.

Quickly making up my mind, I slipped away from my tour group and casually strolled towards the exit. I walked right past him, waiting for him to make the first move.

“Excuse me,” a familiar voice spoke from behind me.

I kept walking.

A tap on the shoulder, and the same voice continued, “I was wondering if you could direct me to a good motel? I’m new in town and don’t know my way around.”

I turned towards him, careful to keep my face expressionless.

“I believe there is a vacancy where I’m staying. In fact, I’m heading there right now if you don’t mind walking.”

“Would it be too corny for me to say that I would follow you anywhere?” he murmured softly.

“This way...”

I turned and began walking, ignoring his comment, as he fell into step beside me.

“Thank you,” he said, returning to a normal speaking tone. “You don’t know how much I appreciate this.”

I shrugged and kept silent.

“My name is Fred,” he offered.

“Fred...?” I repeated in a slightly mocking tone.

“Yes, Fred...and you are...?”

“Alexa.”

“Well, Alexa, I’d like to take you to lunch to show my appreciation for your help.”
