I assumed my wife had gone over the edge when she started running up ridiculous bills for ambulance service for a variety of ailments. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” I muttered when I saw the emergency vehicle parked in front of our place. I wasn’t even worried that something might actually be wrong. This was the eighth time in as many weeks.
The front door was closed, but unlocked. I went inside, some instinct prompting me not to call out her name or otherwise announce my presence. Instead I stood in the front entryway, cocking my head to listen.
“Ouch!” I heard, and it was my wife’s voice. “Is that really necessary?”
“Damn right it is,” said a man’s voice.
I heard a loud slap, and she howled again. Maybe she really was in pain. I headed for the source of the sounds, which seemed to be coming from the kitchen. Sticking my nose cautiously around the doorway, my jaw fell open.
