Introduction

Hello and thanks a lot for investing time and money to improve your game of darts. Maybe you ask yourself, why anyone should write an book dealing with the mental training of darts.

I will help you. I´m a dart player myself and a mental coach, actually I´m a hypnosis-mental coach and relaxation pedagogue. Now you are thinking of an esoteric, freaky pedagogue who tells you what´s right and what´s wrong,

NO, that`s not my intention!!!

Special Thanks to Marina Schwarz, Silke and Oliver White, very special thanks to Tom Reimer and my son and best friend Richard Zultner

Me as a dart player

As a dart player I’d rather belong to the species “relatively ungifted” I trained consequently 3 to 4 hours a day for a while. At this time my game was rather bearable.

My best Leg was a 10-Darter, than I screwed up a 9-Darter on double 12 twice. At home I play Steel, at leagues and competitions e-darts.

I have one request!

Be open-minded for something new and be without prejudice! Experience the many different tools to improve your game of darts. Some things will fit you like a glove, others won`t. As I don´t know you personally, you have to try and find out on your own, what fits you the best.

Be open-minded for new ways.

About me

Maybe you`re interested in who’s the guy who writes this book. So let me just briefly introduce myself.

My name is Richard Weese but my friends just call me Ritsch.

I was born in January 1966, which means I checked my Bullseye. My son and me, live in a relaxed male dominated flat in a city called Kolbermoor, which lies in the beautiful Upper Bavaria.

I`m a trained hypnosis-mental coach, certified relaxing pedagogue and progressive muscle relaxation instructor. (I just mention this, because in Germany titles are everything).

The most important fact - I`m a dart player and that means, I very well know the insanity a dart player suffers from. My work consists mostly in helping people reaching their goals. I occupy myself not only with sports mental coaching, but also with not medical topics such as reduction of stress, mental exam preparation, the increase of self-confidence, weight reduction, reduction of shyness, dissolution of mental blockades and much more.

I enjoy the cooperation with other darts player because I empathize with them. I`m visited by many dart players all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland in order to work on their dart games and mental skills. Personally I would describe myself as a humorous, likeable fellow. Not only the positive attitude belongs to me but also the motto “live and let live”. There was a time in my life when I was a perfectionist. Nothing I did was good enough, there was always a way I could have done it better. I couldn`t enjoy any success.

After I thankfully survived a very serious illness now I see many things with different eyes – more easily. Now I know, nobody and nothing is perfect. People, who believe they have to be perfect for themselves and even worse for others, will not find happiness. If one knows there is no need to be perfect, there will be a feeling of a certain lightness and freedom.

YOU DON`T NEED TO BE PERFECT, JUST TRY TO BE GOOD AND TO DO YOUR BEST.

You and me aren`t perfect and this book isn`t perfect either. You will find mistakes concerning the spelling, punctuation and grammar. But... if no one is completely correct, why should this book be flawless?

What I`m trying to say is:

God damn the perfection, be self-confident and don`t care about what other people think of you!

Introduction

“Darts is to 90 % a matter of mind, the rest is a mental thing”.

Author unknown

More frequently one hears phrases like ...”Mentally I was a bit under the weather today...” or “I had a lot on my mind” or “...”I was at my best today”. I got the impression that power density in the upper one-third and at the top of the list is higher with the dart plays.

You can witness this especially at the PDC. Some years ago a player throwing a 95 average could dream of a competition victory, today one has to give in the second round. Sure, there is a possibility to be positioned further forward, but the number of players, playing an average of 100+ is growing.

Not only at the PDC or at the BDO top performances will be achieved but also at DDV events, the DDV youth, at ranking tournaments of the state associations and at E-Darts tournaments ranging from international championship to tournaments in pubs. You can admire top performance in many places.

Something I want to point out: this book is intended for all dart players! Doesn`t matter if you are a beginner, an advanced player or even a very ambitious player.

If you throw your darts into a board with sisal bristles (computing genius), but also if you throw your darts into an oversized calculator, jingling and flashing and eating 2-euro coins.

It`s the fun in playing darts that connects us.

And the fact that there is only a fine line between success and failure, between joy and frustration.

Doesn`t it mostly rain in the land where darts had been invented? For me it´s a fact: I don´t know any other sport looking that easy for outsiders and being that demanding for a player. There is rarely any other type of sport mental strength is that important than in playing darts.

What exactly is the mental strength I´m talking about, the mental strength that bestows success and fame to a dart player, while a mentally weak player won´t know the true promise of success and win a great title? In my book mental strength is something happening in one’s head.

“Win or lose is a mind thing

The mind can support but also prevent a dart player from reaching his goals.

Good news

You can improve your dart game step by step using the book and the audio. Especially in a competition you will become better and better having fun while playing darts!

Bad news

You have to work for it. You have to practice the mental training every day. If one assumes that the success in darts depends on mental strength to a large extent why does rarely anybody train the mental thing but rather the arm? Wouldn`t it make sense to train the brain, when training the technique every day, too? As the ambition differs from person to person I can´t define an expenditure of time.

If you, for example train two hours a day, which isn`t too much for an ambitious player, a mental training for about 15 to 30 minutes should be enough. More of that later! As you already noticed I addressed you with an amicable you. This is by no means disrespect, in fact I´m an active dart player as well. I think an amicable you is appropriate among us players, as well as I do with my clients in my sessions.

Should this bother you and would like a courteous you please imagine the courteous you. Later on I will explain how the imagination works (when we get to the topic visualization).

In principle I´m very humorous and you will notice that in my book and also in my audio files. Dart is really fun, at least it had been for the most of us. So hopefully it’s also fun for you reading this book.

In the past I was in Zurich, because of professional purposes. My sparse leisure time I spent with playing e-darts. So I played for the Zurich league and was very nervous because I hadn`t had that much experience.

The evening before my first game I had the chance to play with a very talented dart player. He asked me: “Are you nervous?” and I said “Yes, a bit...”.Thereupon he said the following phrase I will never forget:

“Take a breath, smile and enjoy the game!”

With this phrase he hit the Bullseye. The game is a game, so you should have fun by playing darts. At least when you start to love playing darts and then increase the efficiency to rapidly. I know that English dart players trust in mental training. In the Netherlands they even practice the mental training with their kids.

There are a lot of books dealing with mental training, but as I know, there is none especially about the darts game. I think that darts needs its own book, that´s why I wrote one. I created the exercises in a way you can use them perfectly for playing darts.

One big chapter in this book deals with the topic: hypnosis in sports, a very effective tool. Let´s begin with improving your playing darts.

Let the games begin GAME ON
