Cole Finds Peace And Quiet Down A Deep Dark Hole

Cole's family was very busy. He had six brothers and sisters. They were a family of Compsognathuses and what they lacked in size, they made up for in noise! It was great having so many siblings, there was always someone to play with. But sometimes, just sometimes, Cole wanted some peace and quiet. He wanted to walk in from school, sit down and relax without being jumped on, or pushed or tickled or asked a load of questions. Sometimes he envied some of the other dinosaurs who didn't have any brothers or sisters or those that just had one.

Cole always felt like he was different from his brothers and sisters. He was a bit of a thinker. He liked to think about things first before diving headfirst into something which is what most of his siblings did. If there was something exciting on after school, then Cole often hesitated before joining in. If one of his siblings dared him to do something, then he considered the consequences of the dare first. This often gained him the reputation of being ‘boring’ amongst his brothers and sisters which Cole thought was a little unfair. He was no less ‘fun’ than them he just liked to consider all his options first.

“I don’t know what you’re complaining about,” one of Cole’s friends had once said, “I’d love to have a brother or sister to play with. I don’t have any! Every evening I just have mom and dad to talk to and when they’re busy they don’t have time to play with me.”

Cole thought about this. His friend was right. It was nice to have brothers and sisters but despite being constantly surrounded by other Compsognathuses, Cole often felt alone.

One day on the way home from school, the seven Compsognathuses began walking home together. They played as they headed off from school, jumping over this and that, pushing each other, and laughing and joking. Cole stayed at the back of the pack keeping out of mischief. Then, when no-one was looking, he decided to wander off the trail. He wanted to go for a little walk by himself, to get some peace and quiet, and to spend some time just by himself.

He breathed in the fresh air. He closed his eyes and lifted his head towards the sky and smiled. He could hear the gentle breeze in the trees, he could smell the recent rains and feel the sun's warm rays on his face. This was what he had been after; a little bit of time to himself to just think about things without be bowled over by one of his siblings.

The house was always so chaotic. He had lost track of the number of times that his mother said his name wrong or had dressed him in his sister’s clothes instead of his own. He was forever being mixed up with one of the others. It was a good job they were all the same size, but it was sometimes a bit embarrassing when his mother dropped him off at school wearing a pair of his sister’s sparkly shoes!

As Cole walked through the wilderness, he walked further and further from the path leading home. His brothers and sisters hadn’t noticed that he was missing and when they all stepped inside their house, their mother didn’t notice he was missing either. There were so many of them. It was just as chaotic around the dinner table with or without Cole. It was just as messy at bath time with or without him too.

Cole was in no hurry to return home. He wasn’t being disobedient on purpose he just knew he needed this time to himself. Soon, the sun started to go down behind the horizon. Cole felt so much better after his walk and now he decided to head home. He looked upwards once more. Orangey-red streaks filled the sky as the sun set. It was a beautiful sight, like an artistic painting as the colors merged with one another on a blank canvas. But Cole wasn’t watching where he was going and with the fading light, he didn’t notice an enormous hole in the ground.

“Arggggh!” he suddenly cried as he felt himself drop through the air.

He landed a second later with a painful crash and let out another yell. He had bumped his head and cricked his neck. He lay at the bottom of a huge hole, battered, and bruised, unable to move. He looked up above him. There was nothing but darkness now and he knew he was in trouble. No one knew where he was and right now back at home nobody had even noticed that he was missing!

“Right children,” said the Compsognathuses mother, “Off to bed! Run along now!”

As they all traipsed off to bed Mrs Compsognathus counted them one by one,

“One…two…three…four…five…six… Oh, we’re missing one,” she said scratching her head.

When all the little dinosaurs were snuggled up in their beds, Mrs Compsognathus stood in the room and counted them all once more. There were still only six. She noticed that Cole’s bed was empty.

“Has anyone seen Cole?” she asked.

The other dinosaurs all sat up in their beds and looked around at Cole’s empty bed. They shook their heads. They couldn’t remember the last time they had seen him. They knew that he had been walking home with them after school but none of them could remember playing with him all evening. Suddenly everyone was worried. They looked outside the window; it was dark outside, the sky was fading to black.
