Chapter One: Introduction

Did You Know?

Earl Simmons chose the stage name DMX after the musical instrument Oberheim DMX drum machine. He used to play it during his stay at the boy’s home his mother sent him into. Later on, he added other interpretations for DMX: “Divine Master of the Unknown” and “Dark Man X.”

Born as Earl Simmons in New York in December 1970, DMX didn’t have the childhood anyone would imagine. Instead of a family filled with love and support, what he got was an abusive mother, a father who abandoned him, and poverty. He spent his youth in the “streets,” in its literal and metaphorical sense. Troubled by his violent tendencies, his mother would often send him to many group homes while growing up. Every time he was out of those institutions, DMX relied on robbery and pick-pocketing to make ends meet. This routine continued until he found his saving grace: music.

In one of those group homes, DMX fell in love with music and made it his passion, despite his environment. At age fourteen, he began beatboxing and writing his lyrics. He also performed at local recreation centers with young children as his audience. Every time he had run-ins with the law, he’d dedicate most of his time in prison to improve his craft. Years later, DMX finally began his rap scene career by producing and selling his own beats and mixtapes. His skills in the genre slowly earned him a local fan base in New York.

In 1992, DMX was signed into Ruffhouse Records and released “Born Loser,” his debut single. But being under a recording company housing an influx of hip-hop artists made it difficult for a rookie like DMX to have a name for himself. As he slowly built his career, he released more songs from 1991 to 1996 and appeared with Jay-Z, Ja Rule, and Mic Geronimo in the underground rap scene.

The breakthrough in DMX's career as an artist came with his single, “Get at Me Dog,” released under Def Jam Recordings in 1998. It gave him his first Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) gold certification, along with its commercial success. It was followed by releasing his debut album, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, the same year. The album sold over five million copies and debuted No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts. DMX enjoyed the same success for his subsequent albums, making him the first artist to have debuted an album at No. 1 five consecutive times on the Billboard charts. Among his bestselling works is “Party Up (Up in Here),” which cemented DMX’s reputation as a respected artist in the industry. The song and its album And Then There Was X was nominated at the 2001 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Album, respectively. Since then, no rap enthusiasts have not heard of DMX and his artistry. In 2008, DMX released a compilation album, The Definition of X: The Pick of the Litter. It featured two of his hit singles, “X Gon’ Give It To Ya” and “Where the Hood At?” In 2012, DMX’s seventh studio album Undisputed was released, featuring American rapper and producer Swizz Beatz. For the years that followed, DMX released more masterpieces that proved his timeless skills in the art.

DMX’s trademark rap involves a raspy delivery that often includes growls and barks–a testament to his lyrical obsession with dogs. The adlib “What!” can be heard numerous times in all of his songs. His discography carries the message “triumph over struggle” as a reflection of his life from the streets to stardom. Many of those close to him felt his compassion towards his craft–an attitude that influenced others around him.

Though he enjoyed his success as a musician, DMX’s career was temporarily stopped several times due to his legal situation. The battles put him in jail over 30 times for a variety of offenses. However, his legal actions weren’t enough to prevent him from taking the initiative to help the less fortunate. DMX had programs aimed to help the homeless and those having a hard time obtaining a proper education.

DMX’s lifestyle was responsible for his substance abuse, forcing him into drug rehabilitation several times throughout the years. Additionally, he had a history of asthma since childhood that grew with him. However, he hadn’t stopped his passion for music and continued releasing songs for his fans. He also appeared in many cameo roles in various movies and television series.

In April 2021, DMX made news across the globe, except that this time, it was not about his newly released single or any of his works. People mourned the death of one of rap’s biggest stars.
