ONE

Travis Logan halted his dusty buckskin when he reached a fork in the trail he was riding to Alder Creek, West Texas. Covered in dust and unshaven, his keen blue eyes swivelled under his hat brim, instinctively checking his surroundings, and a frown appeared on his lean features, for the rolling echoes of a rifle shot were sounding from his right. His expression hardened as he listened, thinking he was the target. As a Texas Ranger, he was an aiming mark for every badman in Texas. He had been a Ranger four years, and right now he was on his way to Alder Creek because there was trouble to be handled.

His bronzed face was taut as he listened to the fading echoes of the shot, and when a rider suddenly appeared on a low ridge he reached for his Winchester 4.40 and jacked a shell into the breech. The rider was coming hell for leather, long black hair streaming out, and Logan’s teeth clicked together when he realized he was looking at a woman. She came hammering down the slope, pushing her mount with hands and heels, and as she drew nearer he could see she was crying, mouth agape, face contorted in panic and shock. Her cheeks were wet with tears.

When she saw Logan she shied away to keep at a safe distance, and then changed her mind and came towards him, raising dust. Logan thought she intended riding him down and swung his horse out of her path. But she hauled on her reins and her mount raised dust as it came to a slithering halt only a couple of feet from him.
