Things to Know about Hawaii

If you’re looking to vacation in the state of Hawaii, there are some basic things that you should know before you come.

The best way to get to Hawaii from the mainland is to fly. Hawaii is completely surrounded by water and is not geographically located in North America, even though it is part of the United States. You can get to Honolulu International Airport, which is the major airport for the island of Oahu.

The city of Honolulu is also located in that area. This airport is the main hub for many people that come to visit the island. If you’re going to one of the other Hawaiian islands, such as Kauai, Maui or the Big Island, you can also get flights from the mainland. Most of the time, you may be required to stop in Oahu to get there.

You have your choices of lodging, with hotels, resorts and condos. Since Hawaii is known for its year-round comfortable weather, there is not a set time when you can visit. Northeasterly trade winds come through to help keep the temperatures comfortable.

Car rentals are recommended so that you can see all that the islands have to offer. Or, if you prefer to be chauffeured while sightseeing, you can take advantage of the bus tours. You will get better views of the islands. You can also find taxis, shuttles and public transportation on most of the Hawaiian islands.

The state of Hawaii is under Hawaii Standard Time. During Daylight Savings Time, Hawaii is six hours behind Eastern Standard Time. When the clocks turn back in the fall, then Hawaii is five hours behind Eastern Standard Time. Hawaii does not participate in Daylight Savings Time, hence the reason for the extra hour during that time.

Leave your winter apparel at home because you won’t need it. However, it may be a good idea to bring a sweater or a jacket because it can get cool in the evenings. You will find that very few people here wear ties and suits, mainly because of the laid-back atmosphere and the fact that it’s too warm to wear them. You will be just fine with casual apparel.

A passport is not required because Hawaii is the 50th state of the United States. The only reason you would need a passport is if you’re visiting outside of the United States and its territories or commonwealths.

The currency here is the U.S. dollar and you are free to use credit cards or travelers’ checks if you’d like. There are also lots of ATM machines all over the islands for your convenience.

English and Hawaiian are the official languages of Hawaii. There are not as many people that speak the latter fluently, but the number is steadily growing. Among the locals, Pidgin English is spoken on the islands.

Hawaiian Traditions

The Lei

There are traditions here in Hawaii that you must be a part of. If not, then you might as well not come. One of the things that you need to get while you’re vacationing here is a lei (pronounced lay). In fact, that’s probably one of the first gifts you would receive upon your arrival on the island.

The local girls look forward to bestowing one of their beloved treasures around your neck. Lei is an Hawaiian word meaning a wreath or garland. If you’ve ever see a lei, you’ll notice that they do resemble the form of a wreath in a looser format or garland like you wrap around a Christmas tree.

The locals take these gifts very seriously and they want you to do the same. It’s a way of showing their gratitude for you coming to the island to visit and is also considered a show of love.

The Hawaiian leis are made by hand, using orchids and other fresh native flowers, such as lehua blossom, the plumeria and maile leaves. Hawaiian leis can also be made out of feathers, plastic flowers, seashells, and origami paper.

However the latter creations are not considered as authentic as the fresh floral creations. Visitors to the island usually don’t get the latter creations. The locals would think of it as an insult to their tradition.
