Trivia-on-Book: Into the Raging Sea by Rachel Slade Take the challenge and share it with friends and family for a time of fun! Into the Raging Sea is a thrilling, but tragic, account of the sinking of the cargo container ship called El Faro. It is a   true-life story, written by Rachael Slade, and it will keep readers in awe of the dynamics of the event. The author’s use of the black box recordings reveals the tragic consequences of incompetence in the eye of a hurricane. The El Faro was manned by thirty- three mariners and this voyage, heading into the hurricane Joaquin, would be their last. Everyone on board the ship was lost at sea. When the black box, with the live recordings of the disaster, was retrieved from its watery grave, it was filled with the voices of the sailors as they tried to save the ship from its disastrous end. Rachael Slade tells the story from recordings intermingled with other observations, and accounts from maritime staff and family members. Into the Raging sea paints a picture of man against nature and the valiant efforts the sailors made to hold their own against a violent hurricane.  Reading this book will highlight the bravery that sailors have in harrowing circumstances. The book shows the reader what happens when sailors, surrounded by incompetence, look into the eye of a hurricane out at sea. Into the Raging Sea is acclaimed as ‘A powerful and affecting story, beautifully written by Slade, A journalist who clearly knows ships and the sea’ – Douglas Preston New York Times Book Review and New York Times Editors Choice. Introducing the Into the Raging Sea by Rachel Slade

R

achael Slade tells the tragic story of the sinking of the El Faro, with accuracy and sensitivity, in her book Into the Raging Sea. This is a story of bravery at sea as thirty-three mariners try to hold onto their ship, in the middle of a hurricane, while crossing the Bahamas. It is the story of a captain and his crew trying to survive this massive storm and sadly they did not. Hurricane Joaquin, a thirty-five-mile-wide aqueous tornado, was a force to be reckoned with. The hurricane brought lightening that flashed through the darkness and torrents of rain that slashed across the ship’s windscreen. Gusts of wind caused the ship to toss and turn. These were the challenges facing the crew as they met the hurricane.  However, the book reveals that there were elements of human error, and failings to heed warnings, that contributed to the final disaster. The trusting crew set off in October 2015, aboard the El Faro a cargo container ship, to sail to Puerto Rico through the Bahamas. Although the ship was an old vessel it was thought to be seaworthy and have satellite communications, navigational systems and weather forecasting resources. However, this was not sufficient to save the ship from disaster and from the poor decisions made by the captain.
