Chapter One: Introduction

Did You Know?

Jeff Bezos wrote the business plan for Amazon while he was on a cross-country drive from New York to Seattle. He immediately set it up in his garage upon arriving on July 5, 1994.

†††

Back in the 1990s, the world witnessed the rise of the Internet Age integrating the World Wide Web into popular culture. What started as a network of machines capable of communicating with one another evolved into something that impacted a plethora of changes in people’s lives. Soon, the Internet became commercialized, making instant communication possible via email, instant messaging, audio, and video calls. But there were still unexplored territories waiting to be discovered in time. Jeff Bezos brought something to the table when he bet on the Internet’s untapped potential in 1994, prompting the creation of what we now know today as one of the world’s biggest e-commerce stores: Amazon.

Bezos was born in 1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and spent most of his childhood in Houston and Miami. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Princeton University. Shortly after graduating, he landed jobs at Wall Street, particularly in Intel, Bell Labs, and Anderson Consulting. When he joined a financial technology telecommunications company, Bezos was assigned to build a system for international trade. His exemplary skills allowed him to be promoted immediately to the head of development and director of customer service. Soon after, he spent two years in banking when he worked with Bankers Trust before joining D.E Shaw & Co, a hedge fund. With his expertise, he became the firm’s youngest vice president at only 30 years old.

In 1994, Bezos resigned from his lucrative position in the corporate world and ventured on a new business in e-commerce, a fresh concept. He gambled on the Internet’s possibilities and set up an online bookstore Cadabra in his garage. Bezos, later on, changed the name to Amazon in honor of South America’s Amazon River. Bezos’ competitive nature and excellence in handling business catapulted his new company into the public corporate field. Three years into the business of selling books and then consumer goods, Amazon had its IPO, cementing Bezos’ name among the first e-commerce companies on Wall Street. He focused on diversifying inventory while expanding the company’s products, including the online sale of music and video. With Bezos’ aggressive approach to Amazon, the company experienced financial distress after an influx of acquisitions and expenditures. However, this was immediately reversed months later when Amazon generated over 400 million dollars profit in 2003. Bezos wanted to ride with the advancements in gadgets–he developed one in 2007 and launched the Amazon Kindle. Over the years, with Bezos as its head, Amazon has been steadily gaining traction as it continues to prove its status as the world’s leading company in e-commerce. Amazon also translated its success into Bezos’ own equity–he became the world’s wealthiest in March 2018 with a net worth of 112 billion dollars, surpassing Microsoft mogul Bill Gates.

Outside Amazon, Bezos materialized his keen interest in science and space exploration when he founded Blue Origin in 2000. The low-profile company became widely famous with Bezos’ endeavor to “colonize the solar system.” In 2013, he also acquired The Washington Post, owning his very own newspaper. He operated his other personal investments through the Bezos Expeditions, a venture capital vehicle. His portfolio consists of giant names worldwide, including Google, Unity Biotech, Grail, and Juno Therapeutics. His choice of stocks reflects his relative interest in healthcare, particularly in biotechnology. In addition, he also used Bezos Expeditions to support philanthropic efforts by donating to various non-profit projects in its name, including the Seattle Museum of History and Princeton’s Industry and the Bezos Center for Neural Circuit Dynamics.

There have been many questions about Bezos’ leadership style, the very core of Amazon’s rapid and steady growth. He employed his “regret-minimization framework” from his days as a hedge fund officer and brought it into Amazon. He was also famous for heavily relying on numbers, quantifying everything he could, including all company aspects, to support his decision-making. Bezos’ employed his “Get Big Fast'' in pushing Amazon to the front of market dominance. Bezos is a strict CEO, always preferring six-page narratives over presentation slides from high-level employees. His five principles in Amazon include: focus on customers instead of competitors; take risks for market leadership; elevate staff morale; establish a company culture; and empower people. Though known to his employees as a boss who creates an adversarial environment while casually throwing insulting remarks, very few can contest Bezos’ capabilities as a leader who brought his company to the top.

Fireside Question 1

Before Amazon, Jeff Bezos worked in various corporations, including Fitel and D.E. Shaw & Co. How did his experience in these companies help him in creating his own business? In what ways did it influence his decision to establish Amazon?
