James Eugene (Jim) Carrey was born on January 17, 1962, in the suburb of Newmarket in Ontario, Canada. His mother, Kathleen Oram, was a housewife of French, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. His father, Percy Carrey, was of French-Canadian descent and worked as an accountant and jazz musician. Their original family surname was Carre.

At an early age, Jim loved performing in front of his family members. He showed off his crazy antics to the delight of his parents and siblings. As a big fan of the television show Monty Python’s Flying Circus (1969-1974), the show inspired him to make good sketch comedy for his family. Not long after, Jim developed a talent for physical comedy, requiring him to practice in front of a mirror. He could contort his body to ridiculous but hilarious forms. He soon learned that he is great at impressions.

After witnessing the talent, his father encouraged him to go into stand-up comedy. At 15, Jim made his first appearance in a comedy bar in Toronto. It ended in disaster. Two years later, he tried his luck again, but this time succeeded. He soon got regular gigs and continued to improve his craft.

In 1980, comedian Rodney Dangerfield noticed him. Carrey would serve as the opening act to Dangerfield’s comedy tour. It paid off as Carrey soon appeared in The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Late Night with David Letterman. Not long after, Carrey appeared in movies and would also get married in 1987 to Melissa Womer. She worked as a cocktail waitress in the Comedy Store where Carrey was a regular stand-up performer.

In 1990, Carrey was included in In Living Color. He called the show his gigantic doorway. It paved the way to 1994, the year that changed Jim Carrey. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber became massive box office hits. Jim Carrey was now a bonafide Hollywood star. He would soon divorced his wife to become single again.

His star continued to shine as he was earning $20 million per film. Carrey became Hollywood’s highest-paid actor at the time. His highest salary was $25 million for Bruce Almighty (2003). The film became the fifth-biggest movie of that year.

In 1998, Carrey tried acting in a serious role by starring in The Truman Show. Critics and fans praised his performance, earning his first Golden Globe win for best performance by an actor. The following year, he won another Golden Globe for Man on the Moon (1999). Everybody now knew that he was not only a good comedian but also a great actor. However, many criticized his weird method-acting technique. It was unconventional and so uncomfortable to everybody on the set.

As one of the biggest Hollywood stars, paparazzi chased Jim Carrey everywhere. And his love life always made headline news. Carrey married Lauren Holly, his co-star in Dumb and Dumber. Their marriage lasted nine months. He was engaged to Renee Zellweger, but they ended their relationship after a year. Carrey then dated several other beautiful women, all lasting months or even shorter. His last long relationship was with actress-model Jenny McCarthy. They were a thing from 2005 to 2010.

News also broke out that Jim Carrey was suffering from depression and other mental issues. They were headline news again. Like most comedians, Carrey’s happy image in public was only a facade. Behind the cameras, Carrey was battling depression and other demons. Many believed he was struggling with his mental issues since he was a teenager.

Now, Jim Carrey also had his share of controversy. His view on vaccination caused a massive uproar. When Carrey claimed that most vaccines administered to children are toxic. He told reporters that the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) was not helping but poisoning American children. The medical community were outraged and accused Carrey of being irresponsible with his ridiculous claim. They demanded Carrey to stop spreading misinformation, but Carrey refused.

Jim Carrey is a strong advocate for transcendental meditation. He said the meditation reduced his risk of heart diseases and other ailments. Carrey also believed in the Law of Attraction. In an interview by another Law of Attraction advocate, Oprah Winfrey, he said that he used visualization techniques to get millions of dollars for his acting services. It came true with Dumb and Dumber, where he received $7 million to star in the movie.

To this day, Carrey is still very active in Hollywood. He played the main villain in Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) which was a big hit. Carrey also produced and starred in Kidding, a new comedy series on air since 2018.
