The history of unicorns in written stories is first mentioned in 2700BC, the unicorn is described as a creature of great power and wisdom. The unicorn is a mythological animal resembling a horse or a goat with a single horn on its forehead. The unicorn appeared in the early Mesopotamian artworks and it also was refered to in the ancient myths of India and China. Certain poetical passages of the Bible refer to a strong and splendid horned animal called Re’Em. This word when translated means “Unicorn” or “Rhinocerous” appearing in many versions of the Bible. But many modern translations prefer wild Ox [Aurochs] which is the correct meaning of the Hebrew Re’Em. I have only touched on a small amount of history, more on the unicorn can be found on Google or in The Encyclopedia Britannica which can give you more information of this mythical animal.

CHAPTER ONE - The story begins

A long time ago, in the ancient lands of Toppadere, there lived Kaihula, the masterful leader of the Unicorns He was the most magnificent beast to be seen in all the Kingdom. Kaihula’s athletic body was pure white, with a mane and tail of gold, and projecting regally from his handsome head was a single, spiralled horn bathed in a crown of beautiful aura.

Kaihula stood majestically, surveying all that was before him from his mountain home. His whole body was filled with pride and love for his fellow unicorns.

Down in the valley below, his people were busy preparing for the biggest event that was to take place in many a year, the wedding of their leader, Kaihula, to his beautiful lady, Athena, a childhood sweetheart.

Athena is the daughter of Siva and Mab, from the land of Paxton, a peaceful settlement. When civil war broke out in Paxton, Siva and Mab decided to send their daughter to Mab’s warrior friend, Kaihula’s father, Oberon.

Oberon and his wife, Sylph, took over the role of parents to Athena when news reached them that her parents had perished at the hands of their captors. Paxton was now ruled by Elbis, known as the Evil One.

The unhappy memories had faded a long time ago from Athena’s memory of the tragic events, due to the loving care of Kaihula’s mother, who had always wanted a daughter

Now, they were both busy making the final preparations for the wedding, which was to take place in three days.

Whilst Kaihula was looking down on this beautiful peaceful land, a touch of sadness filled his heart: if only Athena’s parents were alive to see this day and also Kaihula’s father, who had perished at Paxton whilst trying to save another friend from Elbis’s evil clutches. No one in Toppadere had known or been touched by the evil war, thanks to the bravery of Oberon and his crusading knights of the realm. Now, Kaihula was to carry on as Toppadere’s leader and protector, the task seeming less daunting to Kaihula knowing he would have Athena by his side.

He turned his head towards the sun.Soon, he whispered to himself, soon we will be as one, and my life will be complete. No sooner had he whispered his thoughts when he was hit with a feeling of ill-being that shot through his body like a bolt from the sky. He turned to reassure himself that all was well before he spread his strong beautiful wings and soared high above the mountaintop, taking full advantage of the air currents as he glided towards his love Athena and his mother’s home.

As he entered the courtyard, a feeling of guilt washed over him when he saw his mother’s tired face. Sylph searched his face as if knowing what he was thinking and smiled tenderly to reassure him it was all right.

Without asking, she knew he had been viewing the valley from his secret hiding place known only to himself and Oberon when he was alive. Sylph kissed her son and softly chided him for staying away for so long.

‘Come,’ she said. ‘It’s time to get ready for tonight’s ball, and you must be ready for your guests.’

Even though he was the leader of this land, he followed his mother obediently to the great hall. Kaihula returned his mother’s earlier kiss and swiftly disappeared to his chamber to prepare for this auspicious occasion.

The guests started to arrive from neighbouring villages; friends and family alike came in all their splendour and glory. The great hall was filled with chatter and gaiety waiting for the guest of honour, Athena. The trumpeters sounded her arrival. Everyone gasped and marvelled at her beauty as she walked by the Knights of the Rear Guard of Honour. She glided gracefully towards Kaihula, who was so full of pride and love for Athena. He thought he would burst. Her eyes were full of love as she looked at him, she fluttered her long eyelashes and blushed slightly as he gazed adoringly at her. The moment was broken only by the orchestra as it started to play, and the happy couple led the guests in the first waltz.

They danced and danced until the early hours. Gradually, the guests drifted slowly home, tired out but happy in the knowledge that the celebrations were not yet over in Toppadere. Kaihula sensed Athena was tiring and summoned the guards to escort her back to her quarters. He kissed her on her cheek and bade her good night. Kaihula sensed Athena was out of sight and then turned towards his bedchamber to snatch a few hours of sleep before the wedding banquet the next day.

On his way to his chamber, Kaihula stopped and turned around. He half-expected to see someone, the uneasiness that he had felt earlier in the day had returned.

What was it?he asked himself.
