Learning Armenian Headstart is designed for absolute beginners and addressed to the English-speaking people. Headstart has a clearly defined and limited grammatical syllabus. New language is presented in measured amounts and in logical order. Once learners know roughly 1,000 words, phrases and the basic structure of a new language, I offer learners my next Armenian textbook 'One hundred conversational exercises for foreigners', which is also intended for English-speaking people who want to learn spoken Eastern Armenian; it forms the second part of this book. We hope that these books will contribute to a better understanding and speaking of Armenian.
Learning Armenian Headstart consists of four units. In the first unit we try to teach the Armenian alphabet and the most useful vocabulary. Corresponding examples are intended to understand the main rules of Armenian grammar, especially word formation and affixing. The learning of Armenian sound system and alphabet learning are tightly connected with elementary grammar material and vocabulary, which are given on the left side of each lesson. After acquisition of a basic knowladge of the Armenian alphabet and understanding of the structure of Armenian complex words and word building nuances, we start to learn easy texts, of which there are ten in this book. The second unit consists of ten texts.
After acquisition of writing and reading skills, the learners can read and translate those texts, and with the help of suggested questions, they can explain the texts. The texts include basic language structures and conversational formulas. Each lesson has its grammar summary and text vocabulary. The third unit presents questionnaires and possible answers, which can help in everyday living and communication process. There is also "Vocabulary", which presents the thematic active vocabulary.
The fourth unit is a grammar guide-book, from which the students can benefit in the future too. The grammar section presents the grammar points in tables and is also useful.

We have also added a Writing Book to learn Armenian handwriting.
The II part of the manual is 'One hundred conversational exercises for foreigners'.
Armenian belongs to the Indo-European family of languages where it constitutes an independent branch of its own. The Armenian alphabet was created in 405 AD by enlightener Mesrop Mashtots, under the patronage of King Vramshapuh and Catolicos Sahak Partev; while the Armenians were known to history much earlier /Xenophon mentions them in his 4th century BC history/, the oldest surviving Armenian language text is the 5th century AD Bible translation. The Armenian language passed three stages of development;
Ancient /V-X/
Middle /XI- XVII/
Modern /XVII- up today/
There are two standardized literary forms, Western Armenian and Eastern Armenian. Both Armenian language and literature have recorded not only the history and culture of the Armenian people but also have retained important information about the language, history and culture of the other peoples of the region; so Armenian is especially valuable. First printed documents appeared in Armenia in early 16th century. Western Armenian is spoken by the Diaspora of Armenians created after Genocide of 1915. Eastern Armenian is the official language of Republic of Armenia /1920/. Armenians love any attempt to speak their language and it is a certain moment to win new friends. Lord Byron studied the Armenian language. He helped to compile an Armenian grammar textbook and translated a few Armenian books into English. To overcome the difficulty of understanding the grammar concepts we have done some notes, which can be helpful for learners. Armenian is a complex and beautiful language. Originally there were 36 letters in the Armenian alphabet. Three letters /և, օ, ֆ/ were added in the 10th -12th cc, for a total of 39 letters. Armenian is rich in combinations of consonants, which have presented some difficulties for learners, e.g.

Semantically all nouns can be divided into two main groups - proper names and common nouns. Proper names are written with capital letter, e.g., Դավիթ Սարգսյան, Հայաստան, Երևան, Սևանա լիճ, Արարատ լեռ
Monosyllabic words are not hyphenated. As mentioned before, the vowel ը pronounced at the beginning and in the middle of words is not always written; this vowel forms a "secret" syllable (գաղտնավանկ) and is written only while transferring, e.g. գրող - գը-րող (writer),լսել - լսել (to listen),սպիտակ - ըս-պիտակ (white)
In Armenian nouns form their plural by adding -եր to one-syllable words and -ներ to words which have more than one syllable. If polysyllabic word ends with ն , in plural it is written with double ն , e.g.
սեղան-սեղաններ
բառարան-բառարաններ
անուն-անուններ
Some of monosyllabic words in old Armenian had the ending ն, which appears in plural forms, e.g.
մատ-մատներ
ծոռ-ծոռներ
դուռ-դռներ
գառ-գառներ
թոռ-թոռներ
ձուկ-ձկներ
բեռ-բեռներ
լեռ-լեռներ
մուկ-մկներ
The stress has its permanent place in the Armenian words. The vowel of the last syllable is usually the one that is stressed. The only exception is this; the last syllable with vowel [ը] does not bear stress. In that case stress falls on the previous syllable's vowel. The stress moves towards the end of the word, when an ending or a suffix is added on a word and often causing vowel interchange, e.g.
տու'ն
տու'նը
ընկե'ր
ընկերակա'ն
ծաղի'կ
ծաղկի'
In word-forming and form-building the vowel ու, ի, ե and diphthongs ույ, յա can change. These changes are called automatic alternation (հնչյունափոխություն).
In closed syllables diphthong ույ can turn into ու, e.g.
լույս - լուսավոր/ light - light/ (adj.) գույն - գունավոր /color - colored/ թույն - թունավոր /poison - poisonous/ հույն - հունական /Greek - Greek/ (adj.)
To differ female nouns, the suffix ուհի is often used, e.g., աշակերտ (pupil-male), աշակերտուհի (pupil-female), բանվոր (worker-male), բանվորուհի (worker-female), դերասան (actor), դերասանուհի (actress), ուսանող (student-male), ուսանողուհի (student-female), etc.
In Armenian there is no indefinite article at all. There are two definite articles in Armenian, ը and ն . Article ը is attached to the words ending in a consonant. Article ն is attached to the words ending in a vowel. When the following word starts with a vowel, we again use definite article ն . In that case the definite article ն forms one syllable together with the initial vowel in pronunciation, e.g.
Սա Դավիթն է:
[Sa Davit ne.]
Ես Սառան եմ:
[Yes Sara nem.]
Սա Արամն է:
[Sa Aram ne.]
The subject of the sentence nearly always has a definite article. The definite article is used with nouns that are definite for both the speaker and the listener. Unlike English, definite article may be used with proper names, e.g.
Ուսանողը սովորում է:
Դասախոսը բացատրում է:
Համալսարանը մեծ է:
The only exception is this; when the subject has, as an attribute, an indefinite pronoun, it does not take a definite article.
Մի քանի ուսանողներ շատ լավ էին պարապել:
The possessive articles are a special type of article in Armenian. They are added at the end of the word, used in the function of a noun, to express the meanings of English possessive pronouns my, your, his/her/its, e.g.
վերքս - my wound
վերքդ - your wound
The III person singular pronoun նա does not have a gender distinction in Armenian, e.g.
Ես Լուսինեն եմ: (Ո՞վ եմ:)
Դու Լուսինե՞ն ես: (Ո՞վ ես:)
Նա Լուսինեն է: (Ո՞վ է:)
The noun may take seven cases, nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, ablative, instrumental, locative. There are 8 types of declensions in the Armenian language. The type of declension is determined by the index (հոլովիչ) of the genitive case. The genitive case has the following external endings (indexes): ի, վա, ան, ոջ, ու, ց.
All plural Armenian nouns decline by the way of declension by bի. Exceptions form the nouns belonging to the declension by ց . The grammatical category of gender is missing in Armenian. The Interrogative pronouns Who and What do not have plural in the English language. The corresponding pronouns in Armenian have singular and plural forms (ով - ովքեր, ինչ - ինչեր).
Unlike English in Armenian in interrogative sentences the structure remains the same as in affirmative sentences. The same sentence is expressed just in interrogative intonation. The question mark, ‘՞’ is placed above the last vowel of the verb.
Դու գնում ես: - You are going.
Դու գնու՞մ ես: - Are you going?
Verbs in Armenian have an expansive system of conjugation. Personal verb forms have the categories of mood, tense, person and number. The infinitive of the verbs ends with ել or ալ , e.g.
օգնել /to help/
կարդալ /to read/
ծիծաղել /to laugh/
խաղալ /to play/
տխրել /to be sad/
գնալ /to go/
անջատել /to switch off/
մնալ /to stay/
հանդիպել /to meet/
զգալ /to feel/
բուժել /to cure/
աղալ /to grind/
The impersonal forms of verbs in the Armenian language are called դերբայներ. To the impersonal forms of the Armenian verb in the English language corresponds the infinitive, adverbial participle and participles. There are seven impersonal forms in Armenian. These are used mostly in proverbs.
Անորոշ դերբայ - Infinitive
լսել(ը)
կարդալ(ը)
Անկատար դերբայ - Unperfected participle
լսում
կարդում
Ապակատար դերբայ - Future participle
լսելու
կարդալու
Վաղակատար դերբայ - Past participle
լսել
կարդացել
Համակատար դերբայ - Resultant participle
լսած
կարդացած
Հարակատար դերբայ - Effective participle
լսելիս
կարդալիս
Ենթակայական դերբայ - Subjective participle
լսող
կարդացող
Ժխտական դերբայ - Negative participle
չ+-ի
չ+-ա
The infinitive can be used independently with the definite article and declined by ու declension, e.g.
Ճիշտ գրելը, կարդալը և խոսելը հենց սկզբից պետք է սովորել: Ես եկել եմ Հայաստան հիմնական բնակվելու:
The Resultant participles can also be used independently, e.g.
խաշած միս, եռացրած ջուր, տապակած կարտոֆիլ, խորոված լոլիկ
Not all Armenian verbs have Resultant tenses. Some of them can be used like a personal verb, e.g.
Հոգնած եմ: Քաղցած եմ: Զբաղված եմ: Ամուսնացած եմ:
Հոգնած էի: Քաղցած էի: Զբաղված էի: Ամուսնացած էի:
The infinitive forms of the verb divide into two groups, simple(պարզ) and with suffix (ածանցավոր), which are added between the verb stem and the verbal ending ել or ալ.
Verbs with suffix divide into the following groups:
There are present tense and past tense auxiliary verbs, which are used in the formation of different tenses, e.g.
Ես ---- եմ:
- I am
Ես ---- էի:
- I was
Դու ---- ես:
- You are
Դու ---- էիր:
- You were
Նա ---- է:
- He, she is
Նա ---- էր:
- He, She was
Մենք ---- ենք:
- We are
Մենք ---- էինք:
- We were
Դուք ---- եք:
- You are
Դուք ---- էիք:
- You were
Նրանք ---- են:
- They are
Նրանք ---- էին:
- They were
The negative form of the auxiliary verb is formed by means of the particle չ. Present tense can be rendered in English both as Present and Present Continues tenses. This tense in Armenian is formed by means of present participle and personal forms of the present tense.
Երգում եմ:
Երգում ենք:
Երգում ես:
Երգում եք:
Երգում է:
Երգում են:
Three verbs (գալ, տալ, լալ) form their present tense by adding -իս to their infinitive, e.g.
Գալիս եմ:
Գալիս ենք:
Գալիս ես:
Գալիս եք:
Գալիս է:
Գալիս են:
There are four past tenses in Armenian. The Past Progressive is formed by adding the corresponding forms of the verb »Ù in the Past tense to the progressive participle. These forms can be translated like I was doing, e.g.
Սիրում էի:
Սիրում էինք:
Սիրում էիր:
Սիրում էիք:
Սիրում էր:
Սիրում էին:
The present perfect tense is formed with the help of perfect participle and the present forms of the auxiliary verb, e.g.
Տեսել եմ:
Տեսել ենք:
Տեսել ես:
Տեսել եք:
Տեսել է:
Տեսել են:
The past perfect tense is formed with the help of perfect participle and the past forms of the auxiliary verb to be. Its equivalent in English expressible like had done.
Տեսել էի:
Տեսել էինք:
Տեսել էիր:
Տեսել էիք:
Տեսել էր:
Տեսել էին:
The Simple Past tense shows an action completed in the near past. The Simple Past tense is formed from the Past participle /preterite/ stem. There are two types of endings to form the Simple Past tense; endings for regular verbs of ե and ա conjugations and endings for irregular and verbs with verbal affixes /I group/, e.g.

Another future Subjunctive mood has also two future tenses, future and future-in the-past. We often call this future conditional or կ future. These forms are rendered in English by phrases will + verb. The negative of this mood, unlike the others, is formed by auxiliary verbs, e.g.
կզանգեմ / չեմ զանգի
կզանգեի / չէի զանգի
կզանգես / չես զանգի
կզանգեիր / չէիր զանգի
կզանգի / չի զանգի

կզանգեք / չեք զանգի
կզանգեիք /չէիք զանգի
կզանգեն / չեն զանգի
կզանգեին / չէին զանգի
The Incentive mood has two future tenses, future and future-in the-past. This future is formed by the help of modal particles պիտի or պետք է. These forms are rendered in English by phrases must do or to be going to do.
The Imperative mood shows order, request to accomplishment of the action. It has only second person singular and plural forms. The negative conjugation of Imperative mood forms by means of particle մի, which is put before the verb and is written separately.
