Lions are majestic animals that live in different parts of Africa and Asia. Scientists used to think that there were only two types of lions - African and Asiatic - but now they know that there are actually many different types of lions based on their genes.
Some of the different types of lions are the West African lion, the Central African lion, the East African lion, and the Southern African lion. These lions might look similar on the outside, but they are different on the inside.
By understanding the differences between these lions, we can work to protect them and their homes based on their individual needs. Let’s take a look at some of the differences between the different subspecies of lions.
The Asiatic lion, also known as the Indian lion, is a rare subspecies of lion that is found only in the Gir Forest in India.
There are less than 500 remaining in the wild, and they are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Asiatic lions are smaller than African lions, with males weighing up to around 440 pounds (200 kg) and females around 280 pounds (125 kg). They have a distinct fold of skin on their bellies, which is not seen in other lion subspecies. Asiatic lions also have shorter and less dense manes than African lions. The mane of a male Asiatic lion is also usually darker than that of a male African lion.
