I am so proud to be Canadian, as I’m sure you can tell by the Gamache books.

When I’d finished STILL LIFE, the first book, I sent it out to every agent and publisher I could think of and it was rejected by everyone. And the most common reason?

No one would be interested in a crime novel set in Canada. I was shocked. Especially given the wonderful novels that are set in Canada.

Some publishers and agents suggested if I changed the location, to somewhere in the US or Britain, they might consider it.

And, to be honest, I considered it. I wanted to be published so very much. Years of work I’d put into that first book. And not just work but all my dreams.

But finally my head realized something my heart knew all along. Armand, Clara, Gabri, Ruth, were sons and daughters of Canada. Raised on the soil, on the ethos, on the history and geography and culture and beliefs of this land.

Life is choice. All day, everyday. Who we talk to, where we sit, what we say, how we say it. And our lives become defined by our choices. It's as simple and as complex as that. And as powerful. so when I'm observing that's what I'm watching for. The choices people make
