Trivia-on-Book: Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl Take the challenge and share it with friends and family for a time of fun!  Vikto Frankl lost everything when he went to the Nazi prison camps-- his father, mother, brother, and pregnant wife. The only thing that they could not take away from him was his choice on how to respond to the suffering. It is “the last of human freedoms,” he said, “to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.” Frankl survived the concentration camps, enabling him to develop his psychotherapeutic method called logotherapy. Man’s Search for Meaning is his account of how having meaning in life enables people who go through extreme suffering to survive with their spirit intact.  Hailed as one of the most influential books in the US, the book has been reprinted over 70 times and translated into 24 languages. Introducing the Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

M

an's Search for Meaning is written by Viktor Frankl, considered by Americans as one of the books that influenced them the most. It relates how Frankl survived the Nazi concentration camps in the early 1940s and how his experience helped him develop his psychotherapeuric method called logo therapy.

Frankl relates how he and his fellow prisoners were inhumanely treated by the Nazi guards. He particularly cites the role of the Capo, a prisoner chosen by prison guards as a trustee. They were often more brutal on their fellow prisoners than the actual prison guards. He and fellow prisoners were made to walk early in the dark among stones and boulders. Many of the prisoners had sore feet and they were supported by fellow prisoners for them not to stumble. It dawned on Frankl that thinking of loved ones in those difficult times helped them have hope.  Most of the prisoners thought of running into the wire to commit suicide as a result of their hopeless situation. Frankl promised himself that he will not commit suicide. It was also pointless because the men had small chances of surviving long in the camp. Many eventually ended up in the gas chambers. Frankl relates episodes where witnessing the beauty of nature provided comfort for the prisoners. One time, a prisoner called the attention of his fellow prisoners to look at the setting suns beautiful rays shining through the Bavarian forest. Frankl compared it to a Durer watercolor painting. A fellow prisoner was quoted exclaiming “how beautiful the world could be.” Frankl says that despite the horrible situation in the camp, spiritual life had a chance to deepen among the prisoners. Sensitive people who were less healthy and robust often suffered less because their rich inner and intellectual life enabled them to retreat into their inner selves, away from the depressing reality of the camp.
