Junkyard Blues in Irishville, NY 1986

"There's luck and there's hard luck. I realized when i was young there is a difference. Luck is finding a dollar and buying a scratch off ticket, then finding out you won a million dollars. Hard luck is finding a dollar and getting enough for milk , bread, and maybe a tall boy. All my life all I have had is hard luck. A nibble here, a nibble there. I'm not complaining. It's just a fact. They say sometimes you make your own luck. I've never had much success at that. " Marvin McGregor  sat at the beat up desk jotting down another thought. His boss, Mr. Albert Johnson, just scratched his head when he saw him doing that. Once he found one Marvin left at the desk.  It read simply "My thoughts are my own, my dreams belong to the world." Mr. johnson didn't say much then either. He did let him use the place in the junkyard to crash in. He didn't complain when his buddy, Mad Mike, used some of the junk to make art out of. Truth was Mike got pretty good at making animals out of old fans and office chairs. He was decent at welding and actually sold a few things.

Marvin was so lost in thought he barely heard the tapping on the plastic slide window. One of the locals was flashing his junk quote.  Shopping Cart Bob, a transient, would push his cart around until he had enough crushed aluminum cans and the like for whatever was on sale at the liquor store.  Bob was a bum but not stupid. He would call or ask the price usually before he came in. The way he dressed seemed almost formal. Marvin wondered if he had a backstory. Handing him his cash for twelve dollars and fifty centy cents Marvin nodded as Bob tipped his beaten hat .
