PREFACE

Modern society is rife with immorality, cultism, hooliganism and drugs. Unequivocally, the African core values have fallen apart and are recklessly heading south as the centre seems unable to hold at the seams anymore. For the Youths, fair has become foul; honesty has become hypocrisy, while dedication has becomedrudgery. Society is at its wits end … the Youths, the epitome of rectitude, are now the signpost ofmischief and tomfoolery. An age long scriptural and cultural aphorism states that a properly-tutored child will mature into a responsible adult. Alas! Long have we allowed social media and peer pressure to undermine our virtuous cultural heritage.Who then will bail the cat? Who are the change agents? Parents, Teachers, Elders, Youths, or the society at large? The parents are wailing, the youths are weeping, and society is bleeding. Amid all these, where is the help and hope for the children and the community? "MY IDOL" is a free-flowing drama prose that serves as a potpourri of medication addressing the common youthful vices and their antidotes in a humorous and candid tone. This book is a must-read for teenagers, especially at the secondary school level. We must claim back our value systems!

SCENE 1

Curtains Open

Light opens on Locker Room in the school to reveal a group of boys and girls in sport wears, exchanging pleasantries.

JOHN: (Walks to Emilia, staring at her) Yesterday is gone. Today is another day.

EMILIA: How do you mean?

JOHN: You played against me yesterday.

EMILIA:(laughs) Of course I did, and I’ll still play against you today.

JOHN: Why can’t we play on the same side, at least for once, even in this

game?

EMILIA: Sorry, we cannot be together. I will still play against you.

JOHN: Well, that has always been your will and choice. Go on!

EMILIA:(laughs) Are you afraid that my team is going to win again?

JOHN: No, I am afraid that I am slowly but surely loosing you.

EMILIA: Loosing me?

JOHN: We used to be together, remember?

EMILIA: But that was then, not anymore.

JOHN:(cuts in) You’re going against me and no one goes against me without getting hurt. (John exits)

Light out

SCENE 2

Light comes on full on Basketball Court. The boys are playing against the girls. The bags of the team players are stacked at a far end of the court. John sneaks to where the bags are kept, picks out a bag, takes out a textbook from the bag and begins to tear it into pieces. The sound of a whistle signifies the end of the game, and John darts into a corner to hide.

Emilia and Caleb walk together to pick up their bags and walk away, while John watches jealously.

CALEB: Aren’t you waiting for your parents?

EMILIA:Nah! I am walking home today.

CALEB: It’s good you are trying it today. Taking a walk is a good exercise.

EMILIA: You can say that again!

CALEB: (Caleb persists in his questioning) Better than going in your dad’s car?

EMILIA:Sure. Going in his car makes me lazy.

CALEB: So the rich also cry?

EMILIA: I am neither crying nor complaining.

CALEB: So what are you doing?

EMILIA: Having fun.

CALEB: As in?

EMILIA: Walking home with a good friend.

CALEB: Hmm! Are you saying I am your good friend?

EMILIA: You prefer to be a bad friend?

CALEB: No! Only that I have longed to have you as my friend.

EMILIA: Well, now you have my consent on a platter of gold.

CALEB:(jumps up) thank you. So finally,

EMILIA: Caleb, please remind me, what did the teacher say about osmosis?

CALEB: I have forgotten dear.

EMILIA:(angry) You are no longer my friend. I make friends with those who have retentive memory. If you remind me tomorrow, then we can be friends again (Exit Emilia).

(Caleb stands watching her in disappointment as light fades)

SCENE 3

The scene is a spacious sitting room furnished with expensive household decorations with good ventilation and lights in the sitting room. Benson and Faith comfortably seated watching Faith’s best family series “Moms at war”

BENSONThis program is hitting at me; I want to change it.

FAITH: I am enjoying it.

BENSON: But I am not.

FAITH: Ladies first! So go make use of the one in your room.

BENSON: Nah!

FAITH: Me too, Nah!

BENSON: My daughter would be back soon (as he tries to cunningly collect the remote control, Faith quickly picks it up and runs while Benson goes after her. Emilia opens the door and sees them running around happily, she smiles)

EMILIA:(hugs her parents) Good afternoon Mummy, Good afternoon Daddy.

BENSON: Good afternoon my daughter, you are late today.

EMILIA: We played basketball after school.

FAITH: You need to shower now.

EMILIA: Yes Mummy. (Emilia Exit)

Light Out

SCENE 4

Lights open on Clara’s compound to reveal Tina cracking palm kernel nuts with a stone. Clara walks in.

CLARA:Mum, you are cracking nuts again?

TINA: Yes my daughter.

CLARA: Why not rest a morsel? I am sure you just returned from work?

TINA: What will I do? There is nothing in the house.

CLARA: (frowns and paces) In the morning, I barely scratched a meal before going to school, and now nothing in the house again?

TINA:I have cracked enough nuts to sell in the market. Don’t worry my daughter, I promise you a delicious meal when I return.

CLARA: (frowns) I can’t wait, mum. I am starving.

TINA: My daughter that is the price you and I will be paying to give you quality education in that prestigious school of yours.

(Still cracking the nuts)

CLARA: Mum the price is too high.

TINA: When you were in the public school, we fed well but now I have used all my savings including my monthly salary to pay your fees and other school requirements so that when you finally come out, you can secure a good job.

CLARA: (forces a smile) And a good meal too.

TINA: That’s my girl! Now, take a handful of garri and warm water and silence those worms in your belly while I go and dispose this. (Packing the shells of the nuts)

CLARA: Mummy, are you sure this is worth experimenting on?

TINA: Give it a trial.

BENSON: (picks up the phone) Hello, I just left the office few hours ago. Please ask Doctor Michael to attend to you (Pause) But … (Pause) Okay, I will be there in the next two hours. (Pause …Exhales heavily).

(Faith enters the living room, grabbing his wrist to resist him from going out)

FAITH:I am not going to let you off.

BENSON: A patient’s life is on the line please (He forcefully let go and runs out, leaving Faith disappointed)

EMILIA: Where is dad?

FAITH: He’s gone.

EMILIA: Mummy, never mind, I will do my best.

(Emilia returns to her assignment)

SCENE 6

Lights open in Benson’s living room. Faith is seated, and Emilia is studying. Emilia begins to ransack her bag.

FAITH: What is this tight spot?

EMILIA: My book is missing.

FAITH: Don’t worry, daughter. I will get you another one. It’s time to sleep.

EMILIA:Mum, I am not done yet.

FAITH:(Sings playfully) Early to bed, early to rise makes Emilia healthy,

wealthy, and wise.

(Benson Enters)

BENSON: (Walks to Faith and gives her a peck) The surgery was hectic but successful. Thank God. (Goes close to Emilia) My pilot, go to bed, okay it’s late.

EMILIA: If you had stayed put to steer me through, would I not have finished before now?

BENSON: Don’t worry. Tomorrow is still another day (He helps her up and both are

about to exit before Faith interrupts).

FAITH: Honey, your dinner.

BENSON: You know the rules. Wash down before dinner.

FAITH:(salutes) Yes sir! (Both smiles).

[Exits]

SCENE 7

Lights open in Benson’s Living Room. Faith is lying on the bed as Benson is having a conversation on his phone.

BENSON:Have you taken your medication? (Pause)Please do. It will help ease the pain. (Pause)Okay, let me speak to your husband. (Pause)Sir, please bring her first thing tomorrow morning. Make sure she takes her drugs tonight (Faith angrily snatches his phone and switches it off to his amazement).

BENSON: Darling, you know the nature of my profession. Ninety percent of my clients are pregnant women with different complications. Their lives and that of their babies must be secured at all cost any day, anytime. Imagine you are in their shoes and your doctor’s phone is switched off when you need him. How will you feel? This is the responsibility I have signed up for. Please darling. (He collects his phone and switches it back on).

FAITH:Every day you abandon me here all in the name of emergency. Fifteen years of marriage and it is just Emilia. How can we have another child when you are busy with all these your emergencies at the detriment of your marriage?

Curtain closed

ACT 2

SCENE 1

Caleb at the entrance of the classroom. The rest of the student’s jeer as he waits for Emilia to arrive.

CALEB:(Aside) Now that I have crammed the meaning of osmosis. Emilia will be my friend. (Enter Emilia)I am still your friend. (Stutters)I know it.

(The class burst into laughter).

EMILIA:(Drags him out of the class) Yesterday is gone. Today is another day, another opportunity. We have Economics class, listen attentively when the teaching is going on so you can teach me afterwards and get the friendship you seek.

CALEB:(Muses to himself) Yesterday it was Osmosis, today Economics. Tomorrow might be confusion. God, please help me. I don’t want to miss this opportunity (smiles).

Light out

SCENE 2

Clara is in the corner of the Class. She opens a small nylon bag, takes out garri and chews in a hurry.

JOHN: (Walks up to Clara) What are you doing? (Clara puts her head down to avoid being noticed. John attempts to collect the nylon of garri from her, but she resists without talking. John pulls it out of her hands and the garri pour out. (Surprised)

CLARA: (Defiantly) It’s my choice to eat whatever I like (Stands up and makes to leave).

JOHN: You should have eaten it with soup.

(Exit Clara)

Fade out

SCENE 3

Lights open on Emilia standing in front of the Classroom as she addresses her female classmates.

EMILIA: My friends, I speak to you because of my love for you. You are all aware that there is time for everything; time to read and a time to work, a time to marry and a time to born. The time will come when men will ask your hands in marriage. Now is the time to marry your books and avoid distractions from the male folks all in the name of love. Remember, your future lies in your hands and you are too precious to be bought over with money.

(Emilia continued) Desist from any form of sex. In the game of sex, we ladies lose. Guard your virginity aggressively, it is your pride. Don’t bet with it. Always be brave to say NO to sex whenever the temptation arises.

BLESSING: You have said it all. He who has ears, let him hear.

EMILIA: We must show the boys we are better!

BLESSING: By saying NO to sex?

EMILIA: We are going to beat them hands down if we cooperate and study together. We can until the end of time, take the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth positions (they all scream in excitement) till all the good positions are done with. Then the bottom pot, (gesticulates) we can let them have it!(smiles)

BLESSING: How do we do it?

EMILIA: We must all agree on one topic, read it overnight; and the next day, we brainstorm. With this, no tests or exam questions will be weird to us. (
