It was my habit to stand on the beach late at night, after everyone else had gone, pretending that this would be the time when I would no longer feel the fear. Some thought me crazy for being afraid of the water—I had no logical reason for it. Others told me to accept my phobia and steer clear of the ocean. But there was a sensual rhythm to the sea, a power in the waves and caress in the sea air that I couldn’t seem to let go of. So each week I made the drive down to the shore and stood there, wishing I could shed my clothes and run into waves.

There was a chill in the air on this night as I gazed out on the moonlit water. I stood parallel to the volleyball net nearby. I managed to venture this far out onto the sand, but no farther.

I was shivering and lost in thought, too lulled by the tide to hear the stranger shuffling through the sand. Or perhaps he truly made no sound as he approached me.

“It appears I’m not the only one who prefers the beach at this hour,” he said.
