‘
Scusate il ritardo' (Sorry for the delay) is one of the slogans used by Napoli football fans to ironise about a Scudetto (Title) that Naples has been missing for 33 years.
And ‘
Napoli: Scudetto 33 Year Later’ – with subtitle 'Sorry for the Delay' – is the title of this photostory, in more then
150 shots, made to celebrate the third Scudetto long awaited by Neapolitans living in Naples, and by those cheering from the rest of Italy and the rest of the world where they work, hope and love.
The photo story is a
true itinerary through the neighbourhoods of Naples. There is no shortage of photos of Spaccanapoli, Via San Gregorio Armeno and other places of Naples' identity.
All of the photos, however, show the city's historical places in the third Scudetto. So an SSC Napoli flag or banner is always present in the photos.
And there is no lack of photographs taken in lesser-known places in Naples, but which are able to show all the deep love of this city for its football team.

Initially, the photographic ebook was only supposed to collect 97 photos. The choice to include 97 photographs was not random: in Naples, numbers are important. 97 are the years of the SSC Napoli founded in 1926.
But the neighbourhoods and quarters of Naples presented themselves to my eyes as a riot of choreography. I soon realised that it would be impossible to contain the passion and attachment to the team in 97 photographic shots.
So at the end of the selection I included 136 photo from the historic quarters of Naples - Quartieri Spagnoli, Rione Sanità, Rione Forcella, Case Nuove, etc. - to tell the story of how the city prepared for the third Scudetto in the history of SSC Napoli.
The photo story is a true itinerary through the Quarters of Naples. There is no shortage of photos of Spaccanapoli, Via San Gregorio Armeno and other places of Naples' identity.
All photos, however, show the historical places of the city in the III Scudetto perspective. So an SSC Napoli flag or banner is always present in the photos.
And there is no lack of photographs taken in lesser-known places in Naples, but which are able to show all the deep love of this city for its football team.
With tourists in mind, therefore, each photograph is accompanied by the following information:
a presentation caption and the street or square where it was taken;
the geographical coordinates of Google Maps so that you can go to the site and admire the choreography or the artwork specially created for the occasion in person.
The information is placed below each photograph.

The photographs are reported largely following a shot order, i.e. they follow a temporal order. I should add that it was a sort of treasure hunt through the streets, alleys, squares and little squares of the Naples quarters. A treasure hunt that required me to 'get lost'.
I am certain, and reluctantly, that I have not found all the treasures, however, the photos here are representative of the whole of Naples. A city that has united under one faith, which is called SSC Napoli. A city whose people have united around a team, around an ideal of further redemption... even social redemption if you like.
The province of Naples also participated in a choral and festive manner, but wanting to represent it all with more shots was not within my reach. The journey was extensive and not without a few aches and pains that forced me to sit on the bench at one point.
The photos were taken with a Fujifilm X-T5.
Most of the photos are vertical to comply with the format of smartphones, iPhones, iPads and tablets. Horizontal photos are however present in the photo ebook.
As I have already written, initially the idea was to publish 97 photos, as many as the number of years of the Napoli football club. My tactics on the pitch, however, were taken hostage by the game of photographs that took over and flooded the ebook with over 100 shots (136 to be precise).
You will also notice in some of the photos the presence of cables running through them. In the neighbourhoods, flying cables are a constant; they are used to hang clothes, to support street lighting, for the passage of the tram. They are part of the urban landscape of Naples.
Two autobiographical photos complete the collection. They are two photos depicting two objects from my childhood that are linked to the city's football history and in particular to Napoli's first Scudetto. The two memorabilia at the end of this story made up of photographs are, a flag with the SSC Napoli team print from the 1986/87 football championship and a supporter's scarf. Two historical artefacts that I wanted to bring back here, trying to build a bridge between two histories. The glorious one of Maradona's Napoli and the one of today which hopefully marks a new beginning.
The whistle blows, the photo story takes the lead.

A little peek at Wikipedia allows us to "discover" that the Diego Armando Maradona stadium was born with the name Stadio del Sole (1956), only to be renamed San Paolo stadium in 1963. From 20 December 2020 it will forever be the stadium that carries the name of El Pibe de Oro.
