Executive Summary of One Hundred Years of Solitude

Did You Know?

One Hundred Years of Solitude is initially written in the Spanish language It is the best-selling book except for the Bible in Latin America.

†††

Cien años de Soledad: One Hundred Years of Solitude is the tale of six generations of the Buendia family in a humble and unpopular town called Macondo. Jose Arcadio Buendia, and Ursula Iguaran, are the founding patriarchs of Macondo. They left Riohacha, Columbia after Jose killed Prudencio Aguilar for insinuating that Jose Arcadio was impotent. Jose and Ursula are cousins, and they always fret bearing children with pig's tails. It is an apparent feeling that lingers over the book. One night in their journey, while they were camping on the riverbank, Jose dreamt of "Macondo," a city that exhibited the world in and about it. Upon awakening, he decides to establish Macondo at the riverside after days of roaming in the jungle, his founding of Macondo is unworldly. Macondo's town is disconnected from the outside world; it remains peaceful for years except for when the gypsies occasionally visit, and acquaint technology to the city, like the telescope and ice.
