The Premier Imperial Bank of Houshou is the financial institute of choice for the rich and the crooked of the Fifth Human Empire. The bank boosts a two thousand year history of excellent but discreet service and its vaults and computers are thought to be impenetrable. However, the Premier Imperial Bank of Houshou has not counted on Ethan Summerton and Holly di Marco, ex-aristocrat and ex-mercenary respectively, finding a way to breach its impenetrable security system and redirect the ill-gotten gains stored at the bank to the coffers of the Galactic Rebellion. On the other hand, Holly and Ethan, whose murdered family was among the select clientele of the bank, have not counted on the Premier Imperial Bank of Houshou's rather eccentric idea of good customer service. This is a novella of 19500 words or approximately 62 print pages in the Shattered Empire universe, but may be read as a standalone.

In the far future, humanity has spread out across the universe, colonised every corner of the galaxy and formed the Fifth Human Empire. It should have been an age of greatness and glory, the pinnacle of human achievement. But instead it was an age of misery and injustice, an age where the wealth of humanity was concentrated in the hands of a small clique of aristocrats and corporations, an age where freedom only meant the freedom to starve, an age where the Empire stood not for peace and justice but only for fear. Until one day, a scattered band of rebels came together to overthrow the Fifth Human Empire. These are their stories.
Partners in Crime
Between the spires of Houshou, capital city of the galactic trade hub Wei Xiu II, flitted a suborbital flyer, its hull painted an indigo so dark it was almost black to match the night sky. Its passage went unobserved by human eyes and untracked by scanners due to some highly illegal and highly effective stealth technology.
In the back of the flyer crouched Ethan Summerton, Lord Summerton in theory, but in practice Ethan didn’t use his title. Not because the Emperor had stripped him off his title and branded him an outlaw and traitor, for neither his name nor his title were the Emperor’s to take.
No, the reason was that it simply wouldn’t be appropriate to insist on being addressed as “my Lord”, when you were a member of the Galactic Rebellion, which among other things had dedicated itself to eradicating aristocratic titles. Besides, whenever someone did address him as Lord Summerton, Ethan always found himself looking over his shoulder, expecting to see his father standing behind him.
