40-1 A HIDDEN TREASURE – A FRANCESCA PERES ADVENTURE

Plot Summary - Chapter by Chapter Breakdown

In a Nutshell: When Francesca Peres decides to return to Cuba after her father’s death, and when the international relations with the island politicos have relaxed, she has one purpose in mind: find the jewelry and gold ingots that her father hid in a grotto on the west coast of the island. During the flight she meets Enrico Cortes. He is a newspaper magnate who owns two national papers on the island and has some shares in the Boston Post where Francesca works as a freelance journalist. Enrico soon offers Francesca to rent his beach house where she can work from home and not being disturbed. The offer presents the perfect opportunity for Francesca to scout the coast for her father’s hidden treasure. However, instead of finding the hidden fortune in the grotto, Francesca finds Enrico who admits knowing her father since he was a boy. He also tells Francesca that she is now the heiress of a huge fortune, which he has been guarding ever since Francesco Peres left the island all those years ago.

Part One - Rising Tension

Chapter One

CH 1/Scene 1 – Just as Fidel Castro makes a move toward assuming control of Cuba and is about to impose a draconian communist regime onto the population of the island, Francisco Peres, a well-known multi-millionaire takes his fortune in jewels and gold ingots to a hidden cove along the western coast of the island. He spends the best part of a day hiding his treasure into the recesses of the stone walls of the cove. Once satisfied that the hidden treasure will sustain the assaults from Mother Nature’s whimsies, Francisco maneuvers his small yacht toward the American coast.

CH 1/Scene 2 – Years have to pass before the communist regime changes with the death of Fidel Castro and the US relaxes its embargo against Cuba. When Francesca Peres decides to return to her father’s country to search for the treasure he spoke of so many times, she meets billionaire Enrico Cortes on the flight to Havana. Sitting in first class, Enrico is as handsome as Francesca has ever seen a man. Francesca’s thrifty living afforded her to sit beside the billionaire during the flight. “Would you like a glass of champagne?” the flight attendant asks Francesca and Enrico. “Absolutely,” Enrico replies without hesitation. Francesca, however, doesn’t know if the beverages are included in the ticket price. And she doesn’t want to spend her money on frivolities such as champagne.

CH 1/Scene 3 – “Not for me, she says to the attendant. Just some soda will be fine. Thank you.” Enrico turns to her and asks, “Don’t you like champagne?” Francesca lifts her gaze to the man and shakes her head. “To tell you the truth, I have never tasted it, so I couldn’t tell you if I like it or not.” Enrico erupts in quiet chuckles while Francesca’s cheeks turn red with embarrassment. Seeing that he’s made a faux pas, Enrico says, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you or laugh at you. It’s the fact that I’ve never met anyone who hasn’t tasted champagne.”

CH 1/Scene 4 – When the attendant comes back with the champagne and club soda, Enrico asks her to bring another glass of champagne for his companion. Even though Francesca doesn’t think it’s appropriate for a young lady to drink any form of liquor in the morning, she accepts graciously. As soon as she tastes the beverage, she is so pleasantly surprised by its refreshing taste that a smile appears on her lips. “That is so good,” she says to Enrico. “Thank you for insisting that I taste this. It’s really wonderful.” Enrico returns the smile and says, “I’m glad you like it, but may I suggest that you only take a few sips of it before they serve lunch, otherwise, you may be quite tipsy by the time we disembark in Havana.”

Chapter Two

CH 2/Scene 1 – During the rest of the flight Enrico and Francesca get better acquainted. However, when Enrico asks where she is staying in Havana, Francesca hesitates. She doesn’t want to give her aunt’s address. Her aunt Henrietta lives in a modest part of town – not a place Enrico would ever frequent, judging from his obvious wealthy appearance. The man is far too rich for Francesca. And until she finds her father’s treasure, she is reluctant to make friends with anyone (rich or poor) who could rob her of her inheritance. “I’ll be staying with my aunt for a while, until I find better accommodation,” Francesca replies. “But if you give me your phone number, I will call you when I’m settled.” Enrico is curious, but agrees – as reluctantly as it may be – to give her his cell number.

CH 2/Scene 2 – As soon as Francesca emerges from the taxi, Henrietta erupts out of her house and rushes to take her niece in her arms. “Madre de Dios!” she exclaims. “Thank God you’re okay,” Francesca returns the hug and says, “I am glad to be here, Tia,” looking into the eyes of the old woman. “Please let’s go in the house,” Henrietta says, turning toward the open front door. “Go and get your aunt’s luggage from the taxi,” she adds, waving at two young boys standing on the porch. “Thank you,” Francesca says to the boys when everyone is finally settled in the kitchen in front of a strong coffee.

CH 2/Scene 3 – “You said in your letter,” Henrietta says, “that you want to find an apartment somewhere out of town where you can be comfortable while you work. I confess, I didn’t understand, Francesca. How can you work while you stay home?” Francesca soon realizes that her aunt and perhaps her young cousins too, are not au fait with the “work from home” concept. “Well, Tia,” Francesca says, “In America we use computers to do our work. That means our boss can verify what we do via e-mail (or messages) that we send electronically from anywhere to anywhere in seconds.” Aunt Henrietta looks at her niece and frowns. “And how do you get paid?” she asks. “The same way. The money is sent to my bank account every month.”

CH 2/Scene 4 – Aunt Henrietta looks at the boys beside her. “Do you know anything about this?” she asks them. Both boys nod and Federico replies. “You’ve seen on TV, Mama. The people in offices use phones and computers to send messages. And you can do the same from home.” Federico turns to Francesca. “But most of the Wi-Fi access is in town, Francesca. If you want to live out of town you may not find a house with appropriate connections.” Francesca lowers her gaze for a moment before saying, “I think I will contact a friend and ask him. He lives in Havana. Maybe he knows a realtor who can direct me to the house or apartment I need.”

Chapter Three

CH 3/Scene 1 – When Francesca finally manages to get Enrico on the line, he sounds busy, even preoccupied one would say. Francesca is about to regret calling him when the man says, “I can’t believe that you actually called me. I thought I would never hear from you since you brushed me off so politely when we landed.” He pauses to hear Francesca giggling at the other end of the line. “So, what can I do for my elusive Cinderella?” Francesca is impressed by the way he sets his preoccupation aside and turns on the charm so easily. “Well,” she says, still hesitant. “I had a talk with my aunt and with my young nephews; the story they gave me is that I would have difficulty finding a place out of town where there is a Wi-Fi connection, so that I could work from home.”

CH 3/Scene 2 – “May I ask what you do for a living, Francesca?” Enrico asks quietly. “I am a blogger for the Boston Post. I work from home and submit articles to the paper’s blog page.” Enrico chuckles lightly. “A journalist, eh? That’s wonderful!” Francesca is surprised by his reaction. “Is that bad?” she asks. “Oh no, not at all. Actually it so happen that I could use your talent….” Francesca can’t resist cutting him off to ask, “You mean you’re an editor?” Enrico bursts in loud laughter now. “No, my dear Francesca; I own two newspapers in Cuba and I own shares in the Boston Post as well.”

CH 3/Scene 3 – Francesca doesn’t know what to say. She didn’t expect that answer. She let the silence fill the air until Enrico asks, “Where would you like to live?” Francesca still surprised by all that she learned about Enrico in two sentences. “I… I… don’t know. But I thought of renting a house or cabin on the west coast. I remember my father speaking of the beauty of the beaches and if I could find some place where they have Wi-Fi and internet, I’ll be happy.” Enrico doesn’t say anything for a moment but then asks, “Would you mind very much if I would rent my house to you?” Francesca was about to say something when he added, “It has Wi-Fi and internet….”

Part Two - Main Action

Chapter Four

CH 4/Scene 1 – Three days later, Francesca puts her luggage back in the trunk of a cab and asks the driver to take her downtown to Enrico’s office. She still doesn’t want to let Enrico know where her aunt lives; silly perhaps, but she feels vulnerable in her current monetary situation, especially now that she is going to rent a house from her new “boss”. On the one hand it’s a marvelous opportunity, but on the other, she wonders if the move is ethical. She would have to think about it and maybe discuss the point with Enrico as soon as she meets him – in his office.

CH 4/Scene 2 – “Ah there you are,” Enrico says when he comes down the hall to greet Francesca in the foyer of his office. “Come with me…” he says before turning to the receptionist. “Mirabelle, please hold my calls for now and see to it that Miss Peres’s luggage is put away in the storage room. Thank you,” he says, putting a hand in Francesca’s back to lead her toward the open door. “Please come in, Miss Peres.” Francesca notes that he addresses her by her last name when in front of other people.

CH 4/ Scene 3 – As soon as they sit down – Francesca in one of the visitors’ chairs facing Enrico’s desk and the latter in his comfortable leather seat – Francesca decides to broach the subject of renting Enrico’s house being ethical. His answer seems to be carefully rehearsed. “I understand what you are saying, Francesca. Yet, since you are going to work from home and only come in the office when you may want to collect your paycheck, I don’t see the problem.” Francesca nods and fiddles with the clasp on her purse. “May I ask you another question?” she says, looking up. “Of course,” Enrico replies. “Do you have a small boat that I could borrow for a couple of days?”

CH 4/ Scene 4 – Enrico frowns and then erupts in loud laughter. “Yes I do have a boat – it’s a yacht actually – and I could take you anywhere you like when it’s convenient for the both of us.” He looks into Francesca’s disappointed face. “Why the sad face?” he asks. “Oh it’s nothing. I just wanted to row along the coast for inspiration and exercise.” She hates to lie to the man, but there is no way she would divulge the purpose for her request. “Well,” Enrico says, rolling his chair to the desk. “As a matter of fact, I do have an excellent kayak that I could lend you for your exercises. It comes with only one condition,” he says, all smiles. “And that is: you accept to have dinner with me later in the week, once you’re settled in your new home.”

Chapter Five

CH 5/ Scene 1 – Francesca doesn’t know if she should accept the invitation. She doesn’t want to say “no” when the man has been so generous thus far. Yet, what else would he expect from her in repayment for all that kindness? Not wanting to offend the man, Francesca says, “That would be very nice, thank you.” She pauses and returns to fiddling with the clasp on her purse before adding, while looking up, “How much would the rent be?” she asks. “I only want a token rent to keep my accountant happy and your tax return honest…. Let’s say, $500 a month, if that’s okay with your budget?”

CH 5/ Scene 2 – Once they agreed on the rent and the type of stories (or blog) Francesca should produce, Enrico accompanies her back to the foyer and asks Mirabelle to contact his chauffeur. “Where would you like me to drive Miss Peres,” the latter asks his boss as soon as he emerges from the elevator. “I’d like you to go to my beach house and help Miss Peres with her luggage and with the necessary shopping for household items. I am renting the house to Miss Peres for the next six months.” Julio Santiago – the chauffeur – smiles and nods. “Very well, sir,” he says to Enrico and then turns to Francesca: “This way, Miss Peres,” he says, indicating the hallway in front of the elevators.

CH 5/ Scene 3 – Once Francesca has bidden goodbye to Mirabelle and her new landlord, she follows Julio to the garage under the building. Julio loads the luggage in the trunk of the town car and off they go to the beach house. It takes nearly two hours for Julio to say, “here it is, Miss Peres,” pointing at a lovely property perched on the hillside, looking out on to the ocean beyond. Francesca feels as if she is living a dream. “Oh my,” she exclaims, looking at the property from the car window. “That’s so big! I never thought it would be such a large house.” Julio looks at Francesca in the rear-view mirror and affixes a broad smile onto his lips.

CH 5/ Scene 4 – A couple of days later and once Francesca is settled in her new home, she writes a thank you email to Enrico. She can hardly find the words she needs to express her gratitude. A few minutes after sending it, she receives a phone call from Enrico. “Are you free for dinner this Friday at seven?” he asks without preamble. “I should think so,” Francesca answers, already elated at the prospect of spending a couple of hours with her wonderful benefactor. But before Friday, Francesca wants to find her father’s treasure. That’s a must, she says to herself.

CH 5/ Scene 5 – As promised, Francesca finds the kayak moored near the pier fronting Enrico’s property. She is wearing appropriate clothing – diving suit and gear (just in case the cave is inundated) – and carries compass and maps that her father gave her before he died. Three-quarters of the way to the cove, Francesca feels strange. She believes someone is observing her from the coast. She lifts her gaze to the promontory above the beach and sees someone looking at her through binoculars. Instantly Francesca decides to avoid her father’s cove and go along the coast to another beach. She beaches the kayak and walks up to the rocky incline bordering the beach. She sits down and waits there for an hour or so. She has brought some lunch, which she eats after going for a long swim.

Part Three - Resolution

Chapter Six

CH 6/ Scene 1 – Every day afterward, Francesca follows the same routine, giving her observer the impression that she is in fact exercising every morning. Friday morning she decides to give it another try – that is: Stopping at her father’s cove and explore it. She hopes her stalker will not be there. She would hate of finding herself face to face with an enemy or someone who knows of the existence of the treasure. Before leaving, she phones Julio (the chauffeur) to confirm that he will pick her up in the evening to go to dinner in town with Enrico. Julio didn’t pick up the phone, so Francesca left a message, wondering if her observer was Julio, acting under orders from Enrico.

CH 6/Scene 2 – Fortunately, “the coast is clear”, so to speak, when Francesca boards the kayak. Since no one is in sight, she decides to stop at her father’s cove. When she does, she tries following the map, but everything seems different to what she sees on paper. She is so engrossed in looking at the map and comparing it to the grotto’s dimensions and appearance that she doesn’t hear Enrico coming in. He surprises her by putting his fingers over her eyes and holding her against him. “I knew you were Francesco’s daughter the minute I saw you in the airport’s lounge room before our flight. I am glad you’ve made it. Francesca turns around and looks up at her landlord – her eyes are betraying her anger. “What are you saying? Why are you following me? How do you know my father?” Enrico embraces her and kisses her fervently. Francesca pushes him away. “Answer me!” she demands.

CH 6/Scene 3 – “Alright, alright, Miss Peres. Your father offered me shelter when I was a boy and my family was killed during a raid. And when he was back in Boston he kept in touch with me. As he grew older, he was afraid that you wouldn’t be able to find his treasure or that I may be in danger if things turned from bad to worse around here, so he gave me the permission (in writing) to dig up everything and to surrender the lot when you landed in Cuba. He also sent photos of you as you grew up and that’s how I recognized you.”

CH 6/Scene 4 – Francesca listened to Enrico’s account with a good dose of disbelief, but when he pulled her father’s last letter to him and the last photograph he received, tears ran down her cheeks. “You are now a billionaire, Miss Peres,” Enrico says, a broad smile adorning his gentle lips. “Now we have a great reason to go for dinner tonight; don’t we?” Francesca doesn’t know what to say. She nestles her face against Enrico’s chest and feels the weight of anxiety leaving her being.

CH 6/Scene 5 – Several months later, Francesca finds adequate lodging for her aunt and nephews. They come and visit her at the beach house at every opportunity. They never have enough of enjoying the beach and the kayak all the while Enrico and Francesca are preparing for their wedding….
