Beschreibung

It's the end of April, 1975. Saigon is about to fall, as the situation goes from severely bad to completely fucked-up. The Snake is faced with a difficult decision: he can fade into the noise of history, slowly obscured by the haze and comfort of innocent love. Or he can follow his instincts into the violent depths of human nature, along a transnational path of conflict paved by drugs and weapons smugglers, from the ricefields of Vietnam to the jungles of El Salvador and Nicaragua. Hardly a choice.  Power & Snake explores the implausible and yet highly probable story of how The Snake has found himself in this situation - and what he does about it. Using the historical events we are aware of as stepping stones in the dangerous swamps of twentieth century conflicts, The Snake brings the reader into the heart of darkness and shows us how to both respect and laugh at the creatures that call it their home.

Freedom is to own an empty suitcase.

THINK AGAIN:

THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL.

How did the Blues Brothers' addiction for dull bananas make them predictable killers?

Why should the Prime Minister of Iran Hasan Ali Mansur not have slapped the Ayatollah Khomeini’s face?

What does Burn Baby Burn have to do with Kissinger probably ordering the killing of General René Schneider?

How did a bunch of incapable Cuban Exiles – who failed miserably in the Bay of Pigs – trigger the US-led war against Vietnam?

When did those men, cultivated in the art of violence, from the rice fields of Vietnam end up in the jungles of El Salvador and Nicaragua?

The answers to these questions - and many more - form the backbone to this Probably a True Story of politics, wars, intrigues, and passion seen through the eyes of THE SNAKE.

A few words of gratitude

In the face of permanent betrayal it’s life saving to have good friends. I wrote this book impulsively with large mental and emotional inputs. I suddenly felt the desire to explain the actions of men and women who went through extremely tough events, not to accuse, neither to excuse, nor to defend, but to rationalize their actions. My gratitude goes to my closest friends and greatest supporters: Bert Dinkel, Andy Goddard, Jonas Franceschina, Daniel Aphrodius, Heinz (Bar No.5) Brönnimann, Peter (Film) Scheid, and de Schpörri Peter (de Fässi) Fässler. My mother Irène who is a writer and teacher herself, my older brother André, my younger brother Markus and his wife Daniela. Last but not least to my daughter Angelina who should only read what I wrote when she gets a bit older. And for all of you again, who refuse to believe that I hadn’t invented the tales, please remind yourself that this is only a story - probably a true one.

BY THE WAY OF AN INTRODUCTION: BUNO

Many friends and colleagues ask me frequently why I know such a story. Primarily, the content and anecdotes were provided to me by real life characters who were directly involved with the happenings it includes. I did however generously change their names, and those of certain places, facts and figures, in order not to expose the original sources. Many of those characters are quite old or have passed into history by now.

But there was of course Buno. His family name I cannot declare either but it was neither Giardano1, nor Chassing2, nor Martino3 all of whose scripts were banned by the Holy See. He was also not born in Nola but in Basel.

Buno loved women, classical music, beer, wine, Italian and French food, and the truth. Unexpectingly and to my greatest surprise he never tasted or let alone ate Asian food. Buno treasured the time he spent in a Jesuit convent but he was actually of Dominican roots. He emphasized the “Nihil annihilate” concept: nothing vanishes, everything returns to its original divine destiny.

Buno’s French, German, Italian, English, Thai, and Laotian language skills were legendary. Buno could start arguments with five or more friends and foes alike in any of those languages simultaneously, on a proficiency level that approached native quality. Buno was the last great incarnation of the Old Indochina Hand, whose swashbuckling tales of up-country trips, thousands of friendly encounters with foods, drinks and beauties - almost all of them true - form his enduring legend created by excess not sanity.

Buno was not an easy character. But if he liked you, as was the case with me – I was very privileged in that the older Buno considered me his younger friend – he would frequently be happy to indulge me in stories of his clandestine history. No known record of our discussion has survived except with me and probably none was kept by him. By this mode Buno’s nearly fifty years of experience in Asia have found their way into the pages that follow.

Second, Buno’s oldest and most loyal friend, a distinguished gentleman by the name of Jean-Hans von GrimselCloud, provided additional inputs of great value. Monsieur von GrimselCloud himself has had extensive working experience in all places around Asia, from Rangoon through Bangkok and Phnom Penh to Saigon.

Third, two restaurants were the main hubs of information exchanges, between Saigon and Bangkok. Both served French food. Both bistrots were run by women with the same first name: Suzanne. Both Ladies were fluent in French and both lived through French colonialism and the

US-led Vietnam War. Saigon Suzanne married Physician Dr Dai and remained in the city as a lawyer. Bangkok Suzanne died in 1989.4 Their respective restaurants were goldmines for story collection and legacy creation. The same generous hospitality was being offered by the legendary Charly Vichai Maurer, who operated the four famous fine dining establishments at Charlies in Thanon Sathorn Tai, La Cigale at Charn Issara Tower both in Bangkok and on Saigon’s Nguyen Van Troi5 Street, as well as the renowned La Pailotte Hotel right at Phnom Penh’s central market. In cooking skill and story telling only Hans-Peter Schwaninger at the Narai Hotel on Bangkok’s Silom Road matched Charly’s talent.

Fourth, there was Lady Great Victory who ran her airline into Laos and Kampuchea while her boyfriend Rich Bourbon The Third (The Thirsty) gathered particular intelligence for Economists that were more then suspiciously welcomed by any ghostwriters.

And of course there was the succulent pout-lipped Tuyêt, affectionally known as “Snow-White”, whose oral argumentation skills could convince any peacelover to become a murderous die-hard mercenary in an instant. In line with family tradition Tuyêt’s great-grandmother is Marguerite Steinheil (1869-1954)6 who worked as ‘la pompe funèbre’ at the Élysées for then President (1895-1899) Félix Faure (1841-1899).7 In honor of the breathtaking blow off by Mademoiselle Steinheil, which led to the tragic death of the 7th Président of France M. Félix Faure, the ship named after him was tragically swallowed by large waves and sank in shallow waters in 1901. However, She (the ship) was resuscitated a few months later, unlike the French President who remained death after going under.

Naturally all fabulous rumors grow out of an ever long-lost story that survived horrific events. Good stories are devoted to legends as the myth and the reality are one and the same. The legend is judged as reality and the reality is condensed in the legend.

This here is no exception, except it’s deniable, surely within the mental realm in which the irrationality has an acceptable place, while being convincincly drafted as a true story, which probably never happened precisely the way I describe it. But then again, on a second thought, who knows… except for the one jotting down the words. Believe me, I have been involved in many events; some publicly known, and a great many others not. Not true, or true lies or lying by omitting the truth are three different terminologies. The spaces that do not overlap are commonly known as plausibly deniable.

I AM SEATO. I KNOW THIS.

The period I am talking about, from April 1975 to 1986, left behind a large piecemeal papertrail, known as the ‘Return to Indochine’.8 The third Indochina war may have been well on its way if not for the good foresight of Thailand’s Prime Minister (1988-1991) General Chatichai Choonhavan (1920-1998) who proposed a more lucrative move for all involved by initiating economic developments to turn Indochina ‘from a Battle Field into a Market Place.’9 The succesor of Prime Minister General Chatichai Choonhavan was Asian Institute of Technology’s (AIT) Chairman Dr Anand Panyarachun (1932-).

When I returned to Thailand and Vietnam in the mid 1980s, the amount of previously written papers were carelessly disregarded by the Western organizations and Radio Broadcasting Bureaus. Vietnam War-related documents could be easily obtained in nearly every provincial office, central government agency and formerly-active, privately-owned commercial institutions. These printed documents made very good paper wrappers for the local sandwich called Banh Mi pate. The more Banh Mi pate I chewed through, the more information I digested, largely because the CIA-owned B’nai B’rith garbage collector10 had to leave town early and left the CHAOS behind.

Most importantly by far was the collapse of the Berlin Wall and East Germany on 9 November 1989, which opened-up floodgates of data related to the US-led Vietnam War, especially in relation to the Teheran and Beirut hostage crises, which were both directly interrelated with the Iran/Contra dealings.

Interestingly these mutual hostage situations themselves produced large amounts of previously secret data, extracted from those who were formerly active in Vietnam. Highlighted are the cases of the hijackings in Tehran and Beirut, where station chief William Buckley (1928-1985) was kidnapped in 1984 and secretly whisked through Syria to Iran for the purpose of interrogation.11

Classically, only the playgrounds were different. The rules of the game - or perhaps more accurately the absence of rules - and the actively-involved players remained the same.

GENERAL MARKUS WOLF & GENERAL WERNER GROSSMANN

Thankfully and largely due to the STASI12 archives, tonnes of material were suddenly released without pre-warning. Because of their unexpected and rapid publication, the said materials could not be tampered with, and their content remained unchanged and genuinely unadulterated. Of particular interest were the original HVA13 documents in Lichtenberg, which were meticulously guarded by the world’s two greatest spymasters: General Markus Wolf (1923-2006) and General Werner Grossmann (1929-2022).14 The files were kept untouched largely due to the fact that DDR citizens were interested merely in their own STASI files, but not in the intelligence gathering network’s foreign services.15

Thus these documents provided a perfectly suitable base for triangulation to prove the authenticity of written and orally recorded data, stored separately from western-manipulated databank 16 Multiple squadrons of muted skeletons hidden in dirty closets began to march out into the open on their shaking, clattering, white-washed legs. Dry as a bone, grinding on each other’s joints without the benefit of fatty tissues to cushion their movements produced a screeching, highly unpleasant, deafening sound. The cries from these victims of the past were going to hunt the ones responsible for their mutilation in the future.

Do my fellow readers, especially European ones, really believe that:

• the Oberammergau’s business school17 located close to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bayern (Bavaria),

• Heidelberg and Ramstein18 HQs of the US Army & Air Force in Europe,

• the deadly aircrash of the youngest Secretary – General of the United Nations, Sweden’s Dag Hammarskjöld19,

• the cowardly execution of Patrice Lumumba20,

• the Krummestrasse 66 in West Berlin21,

• RAF’s (Red Army Faction) Bader-Meinhof Gang,

• Red Brigades22 abducting Prime Minister of Italy Aldo Moro23,

• TWA flight 847’s odyssey between the Maghreb and the Cedar Republic24,

• Achille Lauro hijacking in the Mediterranean25,

• Nuclear scientist Yahya El Mashad26, bludgeoned to death in the Le Meridien Hotel in Paris in 1980,

• the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme27 in 1986,

• the fully-dressed drawing of West-German top politician Uwe Barschel28 who is an acquaintance of Hitler’s successor Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz29, in the bathtub of the Beau-Rivage Hotel30 in Geneva while throwing in mudslendering accusations against hispolitical rival Björn Engholm31 by intriguent manipulator Reiner Pfeiffer32 and imposter Gert Poster33,

had nothing to do with the US-led Vietnam War, in relation to Iran/Contra? Just because Europe is far away from these initial places of action? Think again… The writing is on the wall.

DR RED – RETIRED EXTREMELY DANGEROUS

I, myself, was educated at the Asian Institute of Technology - in short AIT - the former SEATO’s Graduate School of Engineering. I studied and lectured under the personal guidance of legendary football coach Dr Red34 - whose initials stand for ‘Retired Extremely Dangerous’ – a former national soccer association (NSA) sensation.35 Despite similarities with ‘RED’ he’s not to be mixed up with Red Robert Jantzen the CIA station chief in Bangkok from 1959 to 1966, who represented Nugan Hand Bank in Thailand but never got caught red-handed having his hands in the nougat-balls jar.

NSA36 is also, not only by chance and not incredibly surprisingly, a highly sophisticated electronical bigboy-gametoy operator that knew the precise time, place and emotional condition of Colonel Muammar Ghaddafi37 while he flushes with excitement his bidet, anywhere between Benghazi, Sirte38 and Tripoli. Colonel Ghaddafi once wisely said that all great prophets come from the desert and were uneducated: “Mohammed, Jesus, and myself.”

NSA answered in time, and in fact uninvited, that all of them are most probably to be found somewhere between Fort Meade39 and the rest of the world, the UpperWorld, the UnderWorld, WaterWorld, SafariWorld as well as any OuterWorld, including any known or unknown Black Holes of the entire mighty, unexploited, mysterious Universe stretching to the Milky Way®, supposedly owned by Mars® Inc. Put it less cryptically, that means any important or completely unimportant strategic place and deserted trash-hole near and far from the star-spanked banner that D.C. considers at one time or another as important is not very difficult to pinpoint.

DR MAD – MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION

Ajan Red is a renowned world expert on the academic subject of the MAD40 theory, which forbate him by the security and silencing act of the Universal Recording Studio and Theater of RaW operators41 from providing me with any relevant and non-relevant information on the subject of the darkest secrets42 of the Vietnam War, largely conducted in Laos, extended unnecessarily into Kampuchea and its murderous prolongation into Angola and The Congo followed by Iran/Contra. If he did he would have to kill me.

I didn’t ask, so he didn’t have to answer. We kept a good friendship over those many years and most importantly I stayed alive. I was also able to write extensively and in great details, like any other sophisticated academic and missing-in-action, non-active practitioner, on what I didn’t know. Yogi43 said: “In theory, there is no difference between Theory and Practice but in practice, there is.”

Institutionally, AIT is the successor of the famous Bangkok based SEATO (South East Asia Treaty Organization)44 Graduate School of Engineering, defind as the de-facto military alliance of the Western-led free World protecting its values against the profileration of Communism in South East Asia. The congressional hearings of 1963 on foreign assistance appropriations and related agencies recorded that dependency was greatly skewed towards the military, but efforts were to be made to get the SEATO people into the picture.

SEATO’s mission was simple: prevent communism from taking hold in Asia. Here’s a quote from Richard K. Betts (2004), US National Security Strategy: Lenses and Landmarks, at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on page 16: “The Eisenhower administration celebrated the formation of SEATO, the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, as Indochina was partitioned after the French defeat 1954 at Dien Bien Phu. Today, SEATO sounds like a footnote in history… In contrast to NATO, however, none of these other military organizations proved very significant. Or if they were significant as SEATO was supposed to be, they were not successful. By 1975 SEATO was defunct.”

AIT - ASIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

The only survivor that remains from the legendary SEATO is AIT: the Asian Institute of Technology whose famous Chairman is Dr Anand Panyarachun. I have the greatest respect for Professor Dr Anand Panyarachun, the President of AIT and twice Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand: the first time from 2nd March 1991 to 23rd March 1992, taking over from General Chatichai Choohavan and handing over to General Suchinda Kraprayoon (1933-); the second time from 10th June 1992 taking over from Acting Premier Meechai Ruchuphan (1938-) and handing over to Chuan Leekpai (1938-). Dr Anand Panyarachun has never been elected to his government’s highest office but did it out of loyalty to King and country.

A similar story occurred in the USA. The 38th President of the United States was neither elected as President nor as the 40th Vice President. They were the same. Gerald Ford (1913-2006) is the only person to have served as both vice president and president without being elected to either office. In 1973 Ford replaced Vice-President Spiro Angnew (1918-1996) who was accused of corruption. In 1974 Ford, now Vice-President, replaced President Richard Nixon (1913-1994) during Watergate. An extraordinary man who stepped in twice for the good of his country without getting the full due respect he deserves.

In order for the reader to understand the cultural and historical relations in and around the US-led Vietnam War. Westerners, mostly white Christians and notably Americans, believe in a crass misconception of having the right to be in Vietnam, or any other country for that sake, instead of the reality that they might like to be in Vietnam, or any other country for that sake.

A conflict which ended so dramatically in the complete collapse of Saigon finally in the morning hours of 30th April 1975. That memorable day also marked the beginning of another long journey for the caravan of black-ops45 warriors and mercenaries creeping away from Indochina, initially and slightly forgotten to Angola and the Congo followed soon afterwards by Iran and the Lebanon, then on to Central America. The knowledge of these happenings is very fragmentary; framed more in the nature of a legend rather than a truly historical record.

The legacy of the US-led War in Vietnam commenced, or to be more accurate, restarted, at the end of 1954, after the fall of Dien Bien Phu. The reason I write restarted is because of the fact that the US heavily supported the French Colonial Forces during the First Indochina War of 1946-1954 with large funds, ammunition, weaponry and aircraft.

The reader is ‘germanely’ (germanisch) reminded (in Erinnerung gerufen) that during World War II the Nazi-friendly French Vichy government (1940-1945) was headquartered in the town of Vichy, 360km south of Paris, and moved later on to Sigmaringen in Germany.46

The Vichy government was led by Marshall Henri Philippe Petain (1856-1951) whose administration also controlled Indochine française. The British Navy imposed an embargo on shipping to Indochine, although the Japanese military occupation was pleasant enough for most French officials who were allowed to go on administrating Indochina until March 1945, when Imperial Japan took over governance.

GENERAL CHARLES DE GAULLE

During the duration of the Aigle Noire’s exhibition on the Eiffel Tower, General Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970) organised his Resistance, mostly communists and not actually only really French Patriots,47 somewhere between Brazzaville/French Congo and El Djazaïr/Algerie while he resided in exile in London/UK. At the same time as that bleak Black Eagle was flying on the Champs-Élysées and beyond, Georges Pompidou (1911-1974) kept on lecturing Latin and Greek (and maybe German?) at a Parisian Lycée.

At roughly the same time The Mafia of Sicily was sternly opposed to Fascist Benito Mussolini (1883-1945), which is surprising because criminal organizations normaly prefer to work with Fascist regimes against indesirable Communists. The exception is the Italian Mafia, as Boss Salvatore Lucky Luciano (1897-1962) was in prison in the USA and agreed to assist the Americans on landing 1943 in Sicily for leniency. He was released from US prison in 1946 and had to leave the USA for Italy. He arrived a few days later in… you guessed it - Sicily. Similiar to the Corsican Syndicates led by François Lydio Spirito (1900-1967) at Marseille, which preferred to cooperate with the Nazis rather than the communist-leaning Free French Patriotic Movements. The same attitute applied to the Green Gang of Shanghai led by Du Yueh-sheng who served Kuomintang Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek.48

The French air support during the eight years of the First Indochina War from 1946 to 1954 was mainly provided by CAT (Civil Air Transport) later known as Air America.49 This also means that for the story of US-led involvement in the Vietnam War, we can go back as far as Captain Claire Lee Chennault (1890-1958) and his legendary ragtag aircrew immortaly known as the Flying Tigers. Captain Chennault was personally invited by the charming Madame Chiang Kai-shek, the beautiful wife of the Generalissimo, to prop up the Kuomintang airforce.

COLONEL EDWARD GEARY LANSDALE

We could also begin this story with legendary US Air Force Colonel Edward Geary Lansdale (1908-1987), who is most probably the original Alden Pyle in Grahame Greene’s The Quiet American (1955).50 Lansdale’s Black Propaganda printing specialist was Joseph Alsop (1910-1989) the powerful political writer known for his interpretation of politically influenced war stories.51 Colonel Lansdale was also - not completely surprisingly – a trusted member of the rough-rag Flying Tigers. Similar to the famous Dr Margaret Chung (1889-1959) who was their physician.

Interestingly the holding company AirDale Corporation chartered planes from CAT-Civil Air Transport the Kuomintang owned Taiwan Airline, known previously as PanAm’s subsidiary CNAC – the China National Aviation Company. In 1957 it contributed a business named the Asiatic Aeronautical Company, which was later known as Air Asia, and renamed the whole organization as Pacific Corporation. Air America came out of that constellation.

In 1954 Colonel Lansdale arrived in Vietnam fresh from the Philippines, along with 500 hardcore anti-communist mercenaries, with whom he had previously contained the Hukbalahap movement or HUK in short, and it’s leader Luis Taruc (1913-2005). Ironically the HUK and the US fought against a common enemy - the Japanese Imperial Army – but HUK’s main impetus was founded in peasant grievances and poverty.

Colonel Lansdale brutally surpressed communist profileration, which oppossed the election of the US sponsored 7th President of the Philippines (1953-1957) Ramon Magsaysay (1907-1957), who later died in an air crash. The Philippines became the launching pad of US sea, air and land wars against China, Korea, and finally Vietnam. Colonel Lansdale became later on head of Operation Mongoose and Operation 40 the team to assassinate Cuba’s Fidel Castro. Not surprisingly the coordinaton was done out of Miami by a young guy, named Ted Shackley.

Saigon was set up by American Big-Boys on American assumptions, under American patronage to support American policies introducing American consumer goods. A refined Kuomintang political warfare technique was applied to Saigon. It was later used again in El Salvador while in Nicaragua Psychological Operations (Psy-Ops) in Guerrilla Warfare known as Tayacan were employed in support of the Contras against the Sandinistas, using lessons gleaned from the shadow jungle warfare of Indochina.

In Saigon, the Michigan State University provided generously technical, administrative, financial, economic, police and security service assistance. The working group of the University became the vehicle of how Saigon’s security was managed discretely, and of course secretly. An experienced team that was running anti-communist programs in Laos was brought in to supplement the above-mentioned Filipino hardcore anti-communist specialists.

The American aspirations and bravado for superpower status was already well-established globally in 1954. The goal was to Americanize the way Saigon was going to be developed as a new sovereign yet obedient state under Uncle Sam’s fatherly direction. Those Wild West Praïrie Madogs52 made great efforts to demonstrate their seniority by applying their most basic instincts, like a mutt sniffing a French poodle’s fine yellowish flavored Champagne while covering it with its own distinctive Bourbon.

LE COMMANDANT ROGER ’RENE’ FAULQUES

The French Gala in Indochina was over. The legionnaires and the French Empire’s hardcore soldiers wered dead, heavily wounded or awaiting the return to Sidi-Bel-Abbės or mainland France. Legendary commandant Roger Faulques (1924-2011), is one of only twelve survivors of the famous BEP (brigade étrangere parachutistes) at the battle of the RC 4 in 1950. Commandant Faulques suffered multiple injuries. He was considered dead by his legionnaires and left on the battlefield for four days. Faulques survived.53 The Viet Minh deposited his body at the side of the airstrip in That Khe. The ‘man of thousand lives’ was still trying to recover in a military hospital in the Val-de-Gres in France from his grave eight injuries when the Tricolor finally came down in Indochine.

A few months after the decisive French loss at Dien Bien Phu on 6th May 1954, the web of intrigues expanded into unprecedented dimensions. The beaten-up and deeply humiliated French, who had lost their pride, their homeland, their colonies, and many more of their soldiers, were still hanging around with 100,000 men left in Saigon.

But the days of the Champs-Élysées in Indochine were numbered as a multitude of different parties and interest groups were jostling with one another for a slice of the political and economic pie that was being baked up.

Although the Marseilles signed a 1954 armistice, they merely agreed to withdraw from the northern half of the country and hold a nationwide referendum in 1956. The SERVICE DE DOCUMENTATION EXTÉRIEURE ET DE CONTRE ESPIONNAGE (SDECE) maintained its partnership with the Binh Xuyen river pirates, ensuring immense profits from the opium, gambling, and prostitution rackets. The CIA wanted to cancel the referendum since the Communists were to win a popular election. The CIA asked SDECE to abandon its underworld ventures and turn them over to the piss-loving American rye. The Tricolor refused.

CAPTAIN ANTOINE SAVANI

The Croissants mobilized the Binh Xuyen river pirates and some Corsican gangsters into a war-like battalion. For six days the CIA, together with Ngo Dinh Diem’s Saigon Army fought a pitched battle with the SDECE forces. It was for the first and last time that two Western intelligence agencies entered open combat. Colonel Edward Lansdale, the CIA chief, directed operations from the elegant presidential palace in Saigon, while Captain Antoine Savani54, the SDECE chief, moved into the nostalgic river pirates' headquarters in the RunSat-Cholon swamps.

The river pirates offered a reward to anyone who brought Colonel Lansdale to their headquarters, where they promised to cut open his stomach and stuff him with dirt. There were no takers. The river pirates had grown soft through a decade of vice and corruption, and the CIA forces pushed them back into the Run Sat swamps. The outnumbered Corsicans withdrew. At the battle’s end more than 500 were dead, 2000 wounded, and 20’000 homeless. Ngo Dinh Diem, the Americans' handpicked choice, was in firm control of Saigon's political war cum-money-making machine and its extensive underworld connections. The predominant, overriding challenge was the existence of “the Hue-ish Holy Trinity,” a term derived from the Unholy Trinity.57 The pretentious authority of the deeply hated Ngo Dinh Diem (1901-1963_assassinated), his younger brother, the equally if not even more hated Ngo Dinh Nhu (1910-1963_assassinated), the Holy Ghost his older brother Ngo Dinh Thuc (1897-1984) who was the Archbishop of Hue, another brother Ngo Dinh Can (1911-1964_firing_squad)58 making up Trinity plus one, and the charismatic but brutal Mrs Tran Le Xuan (1924-2011) the wife of Ngo Dinh Nhu: the very beautiful Madame Nhu.59

Into play came further that the Can Lao political party of the Ngo Dinh Family predominately prefered relatives and associates from Central Vietnam, namely from Hue and of the Catholic Faith. The constellation behind the Holy Trinity plus two (add Madame Nhu and Brother Can) was to present themselves as a sovereign nationalistic-led government disdaining any relation to French colonialism. What happened in reality was an exchange of lucrative businesses being moved away from the French Colonial Masters to be newly shared exclusively between the controlling government, largely made up of the family of Ngo Dinh Diem and their Can Lao political party cronies backed by their American associates.60

Ngo Dinh Diem, head of the ruling family and the recently created State of Saigon, watched over a newly founded country that consisted of a large amount of freshly-arriving immigrants, Catholics, anti-communists, ex-landlords, spies, soldiers, whores, farmers, and all those motley actors of incongruous mixtures, believers and disbelievers alike, fleeing the north or in pursuit of the scent of fresh blood from further afield.

SANTO TRAFFICANTE

A potpourri of French business interests including Surete, suppletifs, Corsican Mafia, and the homegrown Binh Xuyen Triad, Hoa Hao, and Cao Dai61, mixed up on one side, against the American-led business party of the Diem family on the other side, all were involved in an avaricious redistribution of the most lucrative business interests in the new fiefdom. These were, namely:

• Running the Prostitution Rings and Night Clubs

• Supplying the Opium Dens

• Controlling the Gambling Casinos

Not surprisingly the creation of this business model was a stunning match of Mafia Kingpin Santo Trafficante’s - nickname the ‘King of Cuba’ - cooperation with Fulgencio Batista’s Cuba from 1952 to 1959 under the auspice of then US Vice President (1953-1961) Richard ‘Dick’ Nixon (1913-1994).

So the game was quickly in full swing, thanks to the near-immediate availability of all kinds of hardcore players, from anti-communist diehards, mercenaries, untertakers, gold-diggers, alcoholics, drug addicts and all the other common range of ordinary standard petty criminals from gangsters, drug-dealers, whores, thieves, knaves, fool, crooks and clowns surfacing from any known and unknown crevices, nooks and crannies of the earth.

All those strange castaways, jokers and colorfully-chequered degenerates, together with a sophisticated, select group of professionals at the highest level of government were going to run a profitable and entertaining war for the White Christian crowd back home, convincingly waged in the name of freedom, humanity and democracy. This old boys’ network, using experience from previous employments during WWII and the Korea War made Saigon the fun-capital of the world.

In 1957, political warfare pioneer Ralph Johnson,62 another veteran of the legendary Flying Tigers, arrived in Saigon. He had been on assignment in Indonesia prior to the failed coup d’état against its President (1945-1967) and founding father Sukharno (1901-1970);63 an affair that peaked in the Allen Lawrence Pope (1928-2020) arrest and his capture from 1958-1962. In Laos, RedCar Pop Bull did his missionary work for the secret Hmong army on the Plain of Jars cultivating opium sustainably and opposing the communist Pathet Lao influence.

A bit later in Vietnam came operations known as OPLAN34α, Leaping Lena, LRRP, Delta64 and climaxed in the Phoenix program which was modelled after the German Gestapo.65 Phoenix was basically an assassination program66 which functioned to kidnap, sabotage, and kill anyone opposed to the Saigon Regime. Snatch and Snuff is the terminology used for the targeting of largely civilian suspects and not primary combatants.

These murderous operations had nothing to do with good-natured, white, god-fearing guys defending freedom and democracy in the name of humanity. Which is anyway difficult to explain or define when looking at the actual situation, which is best described as: “Shitting in someone else’s backyard while enslaving the father for years in a caoutchouc plantation, hiring the mother as a maid to give head occasionally, fucking her daughter frequently, and sending her brother into the street as a shoeshine boy. The process does not really shine a decent light on the free world.”

FULGENCIO BATISTA

The situation became even more tense when a second large contribution of US-sponsored die-hard mercenaries started to arrive in Vietnam after the ousting of Fulgencio Batista’s regime in Cuba in the early days of 1959 by Comandante Fidel Castro and Dr Ernesto Guevara.67

Paramilitary types with chequered histories-cumnewly-created refugees from the Cuban failure started to arrive in Saigon. The completely screwed up Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 by anti-Castro forces68 led directly to a large pool of unemployed stateless Cuban fighters who had just lost their homeland for a second time; this time for good.

Those Cuban Exile fighters represented the hardcore of the so-called experts of black-ops warfare that arrived in Vietnam in the early 1960s. In short, those Cuban Exiles’ career paths originated at the Bay of Pigs in Cuba, peaked while slaughtering the natives in the paddy-fields and jungles of Indochina, and ended in the Coffee and Banana Plantations of the Happy Valley near Porto Cabezas in Nicaragua.

Ironically the Iran/Contra scandal ended at precisely the same spot where the earliest bombing raids took off to support the fucked-up Bay of Pigs invasion twenty-five years earlier. The unlucky Boston Harbour United Fruit Banana Men came full circle to destroy their own longstanding reputation and legacy.

The comprehensive story of the US-led Vietnam War started with Aba’s Felix Fernando Gonzales in Nicaragua on 15th April 1961 and ended with the same person in 1986 again in Nicaragua. The Bay of Pigs, the Vietnam War, and Iran/Contra, including the Iran/Iraq War, were the miscarriaged creatures born through copulation by the same sick mode of intercourse in which a very fertile specie of the dirty human mind engaged; carrying with them a strong thrust and lust for deep painful penetration, to say the least.

You may remember the lyrics of this song:

“There was something in the air that night“

“Helicopters bright up the sky, Fernandooo…“

“They were shining there for you and me“

“The SeeEyeAid©69 to be… Fernandoooo…“

“Though I never thought that we could lose“70

When analyzing Vietnam, especially the Vietnam War, the reader has to realize that a large chunk of data is still banned from public viewing. What we – specifically Westerners - know about the Vietnam conflict is most probably not true, or at best widely and generously manipulated to favor the Western-influenced, largely perverted ‘democratic’ and exploited point of view.

A very hard nut to crack is actually proving the falsification of the records on files. A government, and I don’t have to explicitly specify which one, is capable of concealing its misdeeds under a cloak of secrecy, threats and fraud. The consequences for anyone who investigates the past can be life threatening.

Falsification itself is an interesting method of analyzing scientific papers and written case studies. Austrian-British Philosopher and Professor Karl Popper (1902-1994) author of “The Logic of Scientific Discovery” (1959) proposed the theory that in order to validate results, the outcomes have to be tested for a possible falsification and not just merely verified, in other words extending the investigation by going through the ‘via negativa’. What this means in short is that hypothesis and theory can never be completely satisfactorily proven by verfication, as one single falsification can disprove a theory or hypothesis.

But in the subject of the inquiry we have undertaken here, data has often been intentionally falsified – made plainly wrong, untrue, false, faked, incorrect - in order to mislead the public and hide the truth. I therefore had to seperate and classify my collected and analyzed data into seven distinctive categories.

EPISTEMOLOGY

The most difficult classification, bearing the title: “What I don’t know and can’t find”.

Specifically these are data that are unkown, or kept under seal, or which have never been reported, or reported wrongly to a large degree. Here I want to remind the reader: just because the correct data can’t be traced doesn’t mean the incident didn’t happen.71 Within an epistemological72 frame the rules for evidence are to be considered by carefully highlighting fallacies as:

- accepting the evidence of no harm for no evidence of harm.

- accepting no evidence of disease for evidence of no disease.

- accepting no evidence of massacre for evidence of no massacre.

Knowledge will grow scientific only, after the most faithful examination of many phenomena.73

FALSIFICATION

Belongs to the classification: “What I know but is probably not true to a large extent.” This happens quite often also to ‘Western’ drafted documents. There are two main reasons.

One, the writer needed to improve or lower the outcome reported, e.g. increase the body count on enemy soldiers killed, decrease the count on civilians caught in the line of fire, etc. The other reason is that the writer drafted the document correctly and their superior (the archivist) manipulated the results before filing. This happened frequently with files from the Vietnam conflict.

One of the standard phrases often added to many official reports and battle descriptions is for example the following: “And what will always stand out in my mind was the terror and torture they used to strike fear and get compliance from the villagers… an event where a particular village chief's wife, who was pregnant, was disemboweled and their unborn baby lying in the dirt, its little head smashed with a rifle butt by the VC.”

The story recounts a pregnant peasant mother being disembowled by some Viete Cong. Her unborn baby was torn out of her belly and thrown on the ground. If the story would have occured after the Khmer Rouge reign of terror then it would probably be believable, but otherwise it sounds like a US-sponsored propaganda phrase to be included in many combat reports in order to cover, obfuscate or distract from their own war crimes. Terror and repressional acts were frequently used to foster the fine idea of freedom and democracy. Especially since the wording is similiar in most writing and comes straight from the pen of journalists like Hendrix.74 Internal security teams were empowered to prepare false documentations. Numerous state-of-the-pen writing teams existed in the US Army and auxilliary agencies to create genuinely authentic but in reality false documents.
