Beschreibung

…Preceded by Chaos is an illustrated short story. The protagonist, Mitchell Weaver, is a young Emergency Medicine doctor. Mitchell has entered a high stress, distinguished profession with the burden of a variety of particularly disturbing personal demons that he must battle every day in order to maintain the façade of sanity and control. The initial installment of the series, Volume 0, introduces the reader to Mitchell at a point in his life where he has begun to realize that many of his prior indulgences and deficits are no longer compatible with his current life of responsibility.

THE MISSION

We are here on a very special mission. My colleague and I have cause to reestablish contact with two close acquaintances, Stampson Wright and, most especially, Professor Matic. The rigors of residency had left us, Sam and me, distant from our longtime comrades. International men of science and leisure, the shawl that had once offered our band of brothers asylum from the seemingly relentless storm of stress associated with medical school has at some point lost its unifying strand.

Sam and myself, the two more civil of the quartet of dysfunction, have stayed in touch more than we have with the others, likely because we are associated with the same hospital, and partially because the other two have gone rogue. After med school, these two university-trained doctors all but completely fell off the map. Although one could argue that their focus on the pharmacological side of the field has intensified exponentially, they currently don’t practice any organized medicine, they never participated in a residency and I don’t believe they even applied. I wish I could put my finger on the event or time when their desire to practice medicine went sour.  Two incredibly intelligent men, once dedicated to the art of healing, one day found reason to redirect that dedication to less socially-acceptable pursuits.

It has been about two years since I heard from the professor. Likely a shorter period since I saw Stampson; being the younger of the two, Stampson could be sporadically found on the NYC club scene. While the professor has no less a craving for intoxicated nighttime forays, his campaigns are generally darker and less public than that of his younger running partner, and therefore he has been far more elusive. Yes, as had been rumored in Montreal, the professor’s interests have become profoundly perverse. Montreal revealed much about the scientific wizard of debauchery. Like pulling off a bandage comprised of social norms, many of us believe his four days in Canada were the last tug that disconnected the vestiges of any connection to social conformity that he had left. His two-year engagement to be married being the strongest of the connections lost. He gave me the ring she’d left, though I no longer recall exactly when.

That was then, and this is now. Talk out of our alma mater was of ancient scandal, unauthorized access to pharmacy stores, blackmail, and worse, connecting back to our time studying. The few of my fellow alumni I was still on speaking terms with suggested that the dragnet had closed enough that the only suspects left were us. If my future meeting with the New York State Medical Board goes sideways, it could only be a matter of time before the police were informed and we would trade hospital scrubs for jailhouse jumpsuits. Without Porfessor Matic the obvious likely culprit in whatever mayhem had ensued in our glory days – I would be left to face the music alone. I needed to lure the professor back.
