Introducing the Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews

R

ed Sparrow is the first book in the spy novel trilogy written by Jason Matthews.  It is a story following the tradition of spy novels about the Cold War, based on the exploits of CIA agents who face thrilling challenges as they engage in spy work against their fellow spies from the Kremlin. With the Cold War presumably over, Matthews writes a modern spy story with a female spy as a protagonist. Dominika Egorova is an aspiring ballerina who gets accolades from her ballet mentors for an outstanding dancer in training. Her hopes are dashed however when a jealous classmate engineers an accident that injures her leg, rendering her incapable of doing further dance training. She turns to intelligence work for the Russian government upon the invitation of her uncle, a general in the intelligence department. After going through intense training including a stint in the Red Sparrow school where she studied the art of seduction, she is assigned to spy on CIA agent Nate Nash who is reassigned in Helsinki after failing to impress his CIA chief in Moscow. Nate surprises Dominika by being a likable fellow so different from the obnoxious Russian officers she works for. She soon gets disenchanted by the men in government service who use her and who don’t share her ideas and decides to join Nate in spying for the CIA. This puts her in danger, and MARBLE, another highly ranked Russian intelligence officer who spies for the CIA is equally in danger of being revealed. MARBLE is Nate’s contact. As the spying intensifies, Nate and Dominika find it hard to refrain from falling for each other, further complicating their precarious mission. But with Dominika’s exceptional intelligence and skills including that of a synesthetic, she is up to the challenge through her CIA superiors get increasingly nervous about their star spy.

Matthews’ novel is cited for its prodigious details about CIA spy techniques and knowledge, exhibiting Matthews’ three decades working with the CIA. His prose is very descriptive as he identifies different interesting characters in the spy world.
