History Hub presents a brief biography of Richard Nixon from beginning to end, whose remarkable story impacts our lives even today.

Richard Nixon is one of the most famous American presidents. His name connotes administrative corruption in the wake of the Watergate scandal, one of the nation’s biggest political controversies. However, there is more to him than just being the only chief executive to have resigned–his contributions to the United States, particularly in international diplomacy and environmental initiatives, made the country progress. Still, those weren't enough to mask the gushing torrent of criticisms aimed at the President who was accused of betraying the public trust.

Nixon’s legacy might be a mixture of both the good and the bad. Still, his life as a filial son, a caring brother, an excellent student, a competent lawyer and soldier, a loving father and husband, a competent politician, and a passionate president offered a lake of lessons for others to learn from.

Discover in this short yet concise biography the remarkable story of a life who impacted future generations. This book also contains 30 questions for an in-depth discussion into the life of Richard Nixon.

Chapter One: Introduction

Did You Know?

Richard Nixon equals Franklin Roosevelt in as many times nominated on a major party ticket. Both Presidents were chosen five times by their respective parties to represent them in the presidential elections.

†††

The United States has enjoyed freedom and democracy since the successful revolution of the founding fathers from the British Crown. Since then, great names were elected by the majority, occupying the seat of power and leadership. From the times of George Washington until now, Americans choose colors, either red or blue, Republican or Democrat. However, once the President of the United States (POTUS) is decided, he leaves his color and serves the flag and citizens of the nation.

However, the White House is neither absolute protection nor a guarantee that Presidents wouldn’t be tainted with controversies. Sometimes, they may be forced to step down the throne of Washington or resign on their own accord, with their names forever linked to the unfortunate events that had happened during their administration–like Nixon and Watergate, the only President to have resigned from office.

Richard Nixon was the 37th POTUS from 1969 to 1974. He may be the leader of a superpower, but his significant involvement in the infamous Watergate scandal overshadowed his presidency. In the middle of his second term, Nixon resigned instead of facing impeachment over his efforts to cover up illegal activities by his administration. His five years of presidency saw the end of American involvement in the Vietnam War, the ease of tension with China and the Soviet Union, and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Nixon was born in Southern California into a family of Quakers or Friends. He took up law at the Duke School of University and obtained his Juris doctor in 1937. Nixon began his political career as a member of the Congress in 1946. Two years later, after establishing his reputation in public service, he was elected to the United States Senate. In 1951, he was chosen by the GOP to be the running mate of Presidential bid Dwight Eisenhower. Nixon served as the Vice President of the United States for eight years from 1952 to 1960. At the end of his term, he laid his eyes on the presidential seat and took the challenge against Democrat John F. Kennedy, where he narrowly lost. In 1962, Nixon lost to Pat Brown for the governorship of California. But despite the subsequent losses in the political race, he didn’t stop–as a matter of fact, he is far from over. Six years later, in 1968, Nixon ran for the country's highest government office against Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace. The people finally elected him to lead America.

Americans were satisfied with Nixon’s performance in his first term. He has managed to mend broken diplomatic relationships with big countries and withdrew American involvement in an inevitable war. Additionally, his administration handed power to state control from the normal federal grip. Nixon has imposed several economic policies designed to boost the US dollar while weakening inflation. Knowing that his country’s color was never all white and that Americans were a mixture of various races and ethnicities, he enforced desegregation of schools in the Southern States. His administration extended support to the scientific community, too. He presided over Apollo 11 landing on the moon, ending the 20th-century competition of Space Race between Cold War rivals–the United States and the Soviet Union. Nixon’s contributions to the country were translated into votes, extending his presidency for another term in 1972. In his second term, he aligned the US with Israel during the Yom Kippur War, which led to an oil crisis on American soil.

In the latter part of 1973, Nixon’s administration came under fire for allegedly doing “dirty tricks” to maintain and keep the power in the hands of the Republicans. The power-tripping came to light when five men broke into the Watergate complex Democratic Party headquarters the previous year. With widespread media attention, the controversy gained massive publicity. Nixon denied every accusation of his involvement, stating that it’s mere dirty politics while calling the media biased and misleading. However, he could no longer deny the different pieces of evidence and revelations pointing to his administration’s support in the Republicans’ propaganda to sabotage Democrats. His attempt to clear his name failed. There were so many gaps and lapses in the testimonies and evidence presented by his side. While public support was already dwindling to almost none, Nixon insisted on staying in office. But in the long run, the scandal has summoned many issues that further weighed Nixon’s name down. He finally admitted defeat and resigned in August 1974.

The following month, Nixon was granted a presidential pardon by his successor, Gerard Ford. Since then, Nixon spent his life in the hopes of rehabilitating his ruined image. He took many foreign trips as an expert foreign affairs statesman. Nixon died at the age of 84.
