Synopsis

Sophia is a middle-class family girl, very mature and intelligent for her age. Besides having great talent for singing, dancing and acting Sofia dreams of becoming a superstar; there’s only one small thing that separates her from her dream, she suffers from leukemia at the end-of-life phase. This makes Sofia want to meet God and with the help of her two great allies The Raven and Dr. Robins she’ll embark herself in a crazy delusional adventure that will show you worlds full of mystery all combined with fun, color and magic. Music also takes place in this story that assures itself to be the best entertainment for the little ones at home and for all the family, not forgetting, of course the deep message brought by this wonderful story.

Foreword

I know Daniel Vasquez from a long time ago as an interesting theatrical creator and a playwright of adult pieces, but for theatre for kids I just knew about the school he manages, TEATROPHIA, used to stage plays inspired only on entertainment industry work; so when I first read the title SOPHIA SUPERSTAR, and knowing that he previously had staged already his version of JESUCRISTO SUPERSTAR, it intrigued me to get to know the content of this piece and thinking logically and being very naive, of course that this was a kid’s version of the musical about Jesus.

Although it is true that SOPHIA SUPERSTAR is an eloquent wink of the famous musical, there is so little that has to be with it. From the point of view of the content it came as a surprise to me because of the risks that the author with the theme of this KIDS PLAY and at the same time the formal beauty with which this message is presented.

From the point of view of form there are no surprises. It is laudable the roundness of the structure. It is a musical play where there is perfectly balanced theatre, music, humor and moral. Just like a musical score, its scenes were written thinking of the spectacular staging that becomes unforgettable to the audience in general. Its songs are both quaint and complex and the presentation shows the little ones a universe of possibilities of the world they live in and to the adults it invites them to reflect on the world they have created and that they intend to leave to their children.

Oh! But where I did receive a wonderful and intriguing surprise was in its message, what a theme! What a message! An unprecedented work filed in my theatre for kid’s compilation.

Psychoanalysts state that there are three things that imbalance the humans: the constitution of its being, death and sexuality. So well, take a look at the audacity of Daniel Vasquez by developing the first two in a play for kids.

And yes, I say audacity because they are very delicate issues most of all for religious communities and their Latin-American traditions, and it takes courage to write a play with such a dare to make people reflect on religions, especially the ones we are immersed today all this without attempting to infringe any of them. In this play all of the cosmologies and constitutions of the being are presented by the religions in a way they are not violated or vilified, on the contrary, they are shown in tension in favor of a healthy critic and politically correct. That, in a way is the magic of theatre and on the other the master achievement of a playwright.

But the biggest audacity is the acumen with which Daniel Vásquez confronts us with death, he lodges it historically and geographically until it is positional, familiar, and friendly and by that he invites us to look at it with a less painful eye. If for a parent it results in very uncomfortable to talk to their kids about how they were born or about death, SOPHIA SUPERSTAR is going to help you answer the second question easily.

Therefore, the most interesting thing about SOPHIA SUPERSTAR is that it has different levels of subtext in it, according to the age and the situations we have gone through, all of this impregnated of an intelligent humor and a very funny musical environment just for you not to say goodbye to the stage or just the reading without a piece of the life of SOFIA, the beautiful cancer patient girl who takes us to travel into her fantasies with her friends THE RAVEN OF POE and THE CLOWN OF THE HOSPITAL until she becomes a superstar and we are just by her side.

By the way, I just recently read the play for kids that Daniel Vásquez after SOFIA SUPERSTAR and there he is greatly daring, due to him mentioning the other issue I was previously talking about, human sexuality. But we are going to talk about that at another time, let us just enjoy SOFIA SUPERSTAR for now. Bon appetite.
