“Can you start the car?” I asked, Eric a close family friend. I was hoping he’d be able to get it started. It was late and I was a little tipsy.

“Afraid not. Probably a bad battery. I’ll come back tomorrow in the daylight to change it out.” He opened the passenger door for me and waited for me to get in before he walked around.

“Really? That’s great.” That’s weird. I didn’t know Eric had a girlfriend. I stared down, fiddling hands. Eric had always been around, even during the divorce. I thought he’d eventually date my mom.
