Introduction: Notes from the Summareads Team

“My land navigation skills were better than they’d ever been, but that doesn’t mean it was easy. Roads were off limits, there was no flat ground, and for days we bush- whacked up and down steep slopes, in below-freezing temperatures, taking way- points, reading maps, and the countless peaks, ridges, and draws that all looked the same. We moved through thick brush and deep snow banks, splashed through icy creeks, and slalomed the winter skeletons of towering trees. It was painful, challenging, and fucking beautiful, and I was smoking it, mashing every test they could conjure.”

- David Goggins, on qualifying to begin training with Delta Force

Take note that this is NOT the brutality of the actual training. This is the first part of the qualification phase only to begin the training!

David Goggins shares his great story that regardless of where you begin in life, every one of us can accomplish amazing things. For David, his beginnings from poverty and abuse took a road of incredible mental toughness that he transformed into self-discipline and hard work to become a standout among the most rugged men in the world. A road that travels in the exact opposite direction of the alternative that could have been a wasted life of crime and misdeeds leading to obscurity. Accomplishing GREATNESS requires accomplishing 100% of what you are capable of rather settling for the 40% that almost all of us allow to define our lives.

David Goggins is an ultra-athlete but that is not the primary message in his book. His qualifications only begin with being a Navy SEAL (going through Hell Week three times), completing U.S. Army Ranger School (graduated Enlisted Honor Man), and the Air Forces TACP. Googins has also competed in many ultra-marathons (100 miles or more) and other ultra-endurance events. Many times coming out the winner and almost always placing in the top 5. But to Googins, achieving the pinnacle of human physical fitness, holding multiple records and trophies, is much more about breaking through the mental barriers that limit our true potential.

“Sadly, most of us give up when we’ve only given around 40 percent of our maximum effort.”

- David Goggins

Googins teaches all of us about stretching ourselves into our remaining 60% potential in a quest to determine what 100% of our effort will really achieve. From that comes the subtitle to his book - Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds.

Power Principles

Your personal history of trauma and hardship is also your source for inner mental strength to make your mark on this world.Stop ignoring who you are. Use the truth to your advantage. Telling yourself the truth about who you are today and every day is the needed first step towards becoming who you want to be.You’re only 40% of who you could be. You’re leaving 60% of your potential on the table.Far exceed the expectations of anything and anyone that you decide to compete against. Surpass the maximum expectations even if these were once your weakness.Building a calloused mind gets you through anything and everything.Past successes power you through new challenges when pain, boredom, or self-doubt begins setting in.Doing 5% more today means you were underachieving yesterday. Your full potential still lays ahead of you.Scheduling and compartmentalizing your time is critical to getting what you want done in the best way possible.Your maximum is not predetermined. Achieving 100% of your capability will make you better and stronger than those who can merely call themselves among-the-best.You will have failures. You also have the tools needed to transform failures into successes.Be the best-of-the-best at your chosen tasks but keep an eye on the full picture to recognize when a different opportunity will make you even better than you already are.
