The book opens with a description of an event involving a psychiatrist named Carl Jung.
Jung built a two-story house in Bollingen, Switzerland. The house was built at the edge of Lake Zurich, and Jung called it “the Tower.” His tower was a very quiet place with no electricity, where he could go to and from all the lectures and counseling that kept him busy in the city.
His tower was not some escape where he could go whenever he wanted to move away from the job. It was a place where he could go when he wanted to work.
During this time, Jung managed to establish a new branch of psychology that he called “analytical psychology,” which competed against Sigmund Freud’s ideas. If he wanted his theories to succeed, Jung needed to publish many articles and books that would support his ideas. The Tower was a place where he could gather his thoughts and improve his working skills without any distractions.
