ong before HGTV reality TV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines moved into their beautiful farmhouse. The Gaines couple spent years relocating in different houses all over Waco, Texas. With their growing family in tow, they flipped fixer-upper properties and made them into real estate treasures. Along the way, Joanna Gaines realized how much her growing children needed their own space to get creative. This taught the Magnolia Market founder what she deems as one of the most powerful design lessons in her career. In her new book, Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave, Joanna Gaines gets candid about her family and that life-changing moment that her kids Drake, Ella, Duke, and Emmie made her see.
Joanna Gaines shared that when their remodeling company was just starting to gain momentum, they were asked if their own house could be featured in some regional magazines. She and Chip could not believe it. All the attention they earned has somehow led to Joanna putting a ton of pressure on herself. She felt that she always needed to have her home looking beautiful and spotless. Having four young kids, such a task was no small feat for any mother, even Joanna Gaines. She then found that as her children were getting older, it was becoming nearly impossible for her to fully maintain both a practical, usable space for my family and a picture-perfect home.
One afternoon, Joanna found herself in a state of full exhaustion. She realized that there was something that just wasn't right for them. She looked around and saw that there was a lot of "perfection." She pondered and asked, “But where do my kids hang out?” She realized that they don't have a place where they can really play in this house. Suddenly, it hit her.
In her nonstop efforts to make their house look good for a number of anonymous strangers, she had failed to create the space where her children could simply be kids. Around the same time, her husband Chip came home and then he announced that he'd put an offer on another new house that they could flip and eventually move into. Joanna felt like this new house would just be the do-over that she needed to really be able to determine her priorities and put her family on top of the design of their home. That was Joanna Gaines’ first-ever truly intentional design goal. She wanted to make every house that they would ever live in to be for and about them.
She wasn't sure how she would actually make this happen until one day she took her children over to that house. Just as quickly as she opened the door, her children took off down the hall. They were giggling and squealing in delight. That's when Joanna Gaines had an epiphany that has started to change absolutely everything for her. Her children loved it in this house. They could really be kids. She then decided right then and there that she would design everything with intention in mind.
For the first time in her design career, she saw how inspiring it was for her children when she simply carved out a simple space where they could stretch their young imaginations. She realized that as parents, they could either lose their minds to their children’s messes and the endless cleanups after them or as parents, they can choose another perspective.
